Pregnant Runners Question

Hello all you Pregnant Runners! I have a question for you- this will likely be best answered by one of you who has gone through this before but I'm open to opinions from you all :-) I'm a couple days away from my 7th week and before being pregnant I ran an avg 10:30/mile pace not super slow but not fast either, the past two weeks, when I run- that pace has taken a serious decrease to nearly a 14:30/mile pace. (I'm finding that I'm having to walk the majority of the time when normally I can run 5 miles without stopping) On the treadmill I can seem to keep my pace around 11-12/miles which is still slower than normal but faster than the road. My question is- how long did it take you runners to notice a decrease in your endurance while pregnant? I'm sure the Las Vegas heat has a bit to do with it as yesterday it was 101 degrees out when we went for our weekly run, but do you think the entire 4 minute decrease in speed/mile is all to do with the heat or is it partly because of the pregnancy also already? Also last weeks time was a 13:30/mile so within the last week it's decreased another minute. I also have only been running since February so I don't have a lot of history with running either let alone running in the summer or while pregnant lol. I anticipated eventually having to slow from a run to a walk etc but I didn't think it would be at the 6/7 week mark lol. (I did also get the clearance from my Dr to continue running as long as a pay particular attention to making sure I don't overheat-which I have been doing) Any thoughts/opinions are welcome.

Thanks!

Re: Pregnant Runners Question

  • I've been running longer than I can remember and my pace declined about a minute per mile around week 6. I no longer track my pace since I didn't want to stress about it. I just go out and run what feels comfortable. The heat definitely plays a factor in it as well.

  • I've been running for 5 years now and I live in the south so I'm familiar with what summer heat alone will do to your pace without being pregnant. Just to give you some background, I normally run around a 4:30 marathon and a 2:00 half marathon. In the summer, I've run a half before and my time was 2:36. It generally takes me about 2-3 weeks to get "used" to running in the heat and my body becomes a little more efficient. However, for those 2-3 weeks I can guarantee you that almost every run is pretty much a bust. It's full of walk breaks and frustration. I've learned from experience that slowing my pace and carrying some cold water with me helps tremendously. Also, your body is working hard to keep you cool, if you're going to go for longer than 30 minutes it helps to add a gel or something for some nutrition.

That said, let's talk about what the summer AND being 9 weeks pregnant has done to my running. It's almost laughable. I feel like a new runner again. This morning I ran/walked 5 miles and felt like I had done 20. My pace was 3 minutes slower than my "normal" time which is even slower than my usual summer pace. Your body is working working really hard to double its blood supply and support the baby that's growing inside of you. I regularly had my blood pressure, heart rate and temperature taken while undergoing fertility treatments. Since being pregnant I've noticed that all three of those things have increased. Obviously our bodies are already working overtime without having to sustain us through exercise. Be patient, you'll hit the second trimester where everything settles down and your body is just more used to working harder for the baby. It will get easier. Just slow it down, drink more fluids while working out and try not to focus on pace.

Okay I don't feel too bad then, I imagine if you've been running for a long time and you decline at 1/mile pace than since I've only been running since February it's likely that I would decline faster. Bummed, but even at the 14:30 mark, I still got in a good workout and my HR Monitor stayed around the 150 mark when walking. Plus, five miles is still five miles no matter how fast you go right? :-) Thanks for the help!

Thanks! I was hoping it wasn't just me. It's sometimes hard being a relatively new runner and already feeling like your slow as hell and then to watch your time decrease from there ahahaha. Oh well. As long as I'm getting activity in then I'm happy I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy lol. It's just crazy because other than some mild symptoms I still don't "feel" or "look" pregnant and yet when it comes to exercise I'm feeling like I'm much further along in the pregnancy lol. I did carry some water with Nuun (safe during pregnancy I checked) in it to drink on the run, but it was warm by mile 2 which kinda sucked. Like you, I also noticed my heart rate stays higher and gets higher faster, for instance normally when I walk my HR is around 125-135 and yesterday when I was walking it was between 150-160, I would run and try not to let my heart rate go above 170 before slowing it to a walk again only because I'm not sure where my HR should be at- the only thing I could find was that the not going over 140 bpm idea is outdated and no longer followed...

Exactly. Even having gone through a pregnancy before I am honestly shocked at how quickly my pace declined but it is what it is. Growing a human is hard. The best decision I made for myself after seeing the decline was to put my Garmin away. It doesn't matter right now anyway. I'm not going to win any races I sign up for.

  • Yep, my pace is about a minute slower on shorter runs and about 1.5 min slower on longer runs and I'm taking walk breaks to make sure I'm not overheating. Running is no longer about pace or winning the race so I'm not stressed about it.

I'm also having to bring water along with me on shorter runs too, the heat really takes it's toll on me.
Yeah, I was following pace mostly because I didn't think it would have deteriorated so fast, but I think I'm just going to follow my body from now on and not focus on pace-besides doing so will just continue to frustrate me. Especially with the heat. We haven't announced our pregnancy yet so the friend I'm running with is probably wondering what the hell is wrong with me ahahaha- he'll find out soon enough and then it'll make sense.
  • KaylaK1987 Nope, you're not the only one. My pace for my 5 this morning was slower than my pace for a 50 miler. It's sad really. I think it's impressive that you're such a new runner and you're staying at it. There are others who would have gotten frustrated and quit by now. That says a lot.

lol- five is the most I've ever run (unless you count the Super Spartan- which I didn't do much running during lol. Thanks! Yeah, I found that I just absolutely loved it and didn't want to give it up- though mileage wise I've toned it down- I had gotten up to about 16 miles/week but I'm doing between 5-8 right now since it takes longer to get through the miles it ends up being close to the same time wise lol- it keeps me sane though and I have really supportive friends that I've met because of running- been in Vegas for two years and I've met more good friends in the past few months than I have the entire time I've been here. It's amazing what a supportive community running is and they don't make me feel bad about being so much slower than they are- which I'm going to learn to have to get extra used to over the next 8 months or so lol. I want to be a good example to my baby from the very beginning. :-)
  • @kaylak1987 how was the Super Spartan?? I'm signed up for a Spartan Sprint in July and I am so excited! I've run short races, half marathons, and marathons so I wanted to test the waters with something different. Very excited!

I've been telling my husband that for the past 4 weeks. I'm growing a human and it's hard! The fatigue was intense though the iron supplements my Dr. put me on seem to help, but you're right. Right now, it's just about getting out there, plus there's something nice about going out for a "run" without all the electronics holding you back and you can just truly enjoy the time to yourself or with a friend.
  • I can't wait till I can be back to running next week (*hopefully* come on MFM give me good news!) I am dying- doesn't this baby know I didn't train all gross, grey, drizzly winter just to not get to hit the road in this beautiful early summer weather in Seattle?! :)

I love reading the running posts, it makes me miss my runs and makes me happy when I get back into it I will have a good support system!! Hurry up next Friday and get here! :)

It was soooo much fun! I want to do another one but the next Super out here in April of next year so I doubt I'll be ready for it with a January due date lol. I was so proud of myself- one becuase I've never been an athletic person and two- because I did things obstacle wise that had it been an ordinary situation I never would have thought I was capable of. mine was 9 miles and 20 obstacles and I only ended up having to do 3 sets of burpees. I couldn't climb the rope which I knew i wasn't going to be able to do, i fell off the monkey bars because the guy behind me swung into me, and then I couldn't get the spear into the haybale (they call that one the burpee maker because so few people can actually do it lol) It's totally worth it though. You're going to have a blast. I climbed walls and flipped tractor tires, and carried buckets of gravel and the entire time I had a smile on my face. I'm so excited for you!

Pretty sure I'm gonna be doing some burpees. I'll be 16 weeks when I do mine and I'm not gonna do any obstacles I don't feel comfortable doing so I should be fine. Reading your experience just got me even more excited! My husband signed up with me so hopefully he can help me out :)

Oh yeah, you should be okay, for instance in my race the first like five obstacles were just hoping over a short fence or crawling under it, or crawling through a net. The wall traverses may be hard just because of how you have to climb over them and the wall hits your stomach especially on the taller ones. They encourage team support. I was on a team with six people the 3 fast went ahead of us 3 slower (that was the plan) but we helped each other over walls or jumping down from them etc. and encouraged each other a lot- it's amazing how much just a little bit of cheer helps you get through. There's a bunch of obstacles in mine where you carried sacks of gravel over you shoulder that you should be able to get through- I had to carry a like 80 lb boulder for one of the obstacles and that was hard in itself so that may be one you want to skip, but there were a couple obstacles where you sit and pull heavy objects with a rope- you'll probably be able to do those fine also. You're gonna have so much fun! I did mine the weekend we started trying for our baby (april 5th) so I didn't have to worry about that sort of stuff at that point and a lot of the obstacles have a bit of a wait so you have time to kind of watch someone do it and see if it's something you want to take on or not. The burpee for the most part are done on the honor system and everyone save for a few "cheaters lol" did all 30 for each missed obstacle. You aren't given a time limit on them, it just adds to your overall time for the race because it takes longer, so just take your time on the burpees because they do take a lot out of you. Don't worry too much about whether they're sloppy or not, they don't care, they just want to see you do it. :-)
  • I used to run 6 miles 7 days a week and now I'm down to 4 miles 7 (or 6) days a week with an added minute to each mile.  Most of it is due to nausea.
Seven days a week? Wow! I followed the 10% rule and got up to 16 miles a week 4 days a week, but ended up with shin splints and had to get new shoes and taper down my training which bummed me out, but was probably better because it prepared me for the lower mileage with pregnancy.
  • @kaylak1987 an MFM is a maternal-fetal medicine doc, or a perinatoligist, essentially my high risk obstetrician

  • @lalalady54 thanks! i'll be going to one of them soon. Not because I'm high risk though. Essentially, my insurance won't cover the cost of certain ultrasounds unless they're high risk so to keep the patient's costs down, my dr sends us to a high risk for them so that insurance covers it.

I'm one of those weirdos who enjoys burpees. On days when I don't run, I do tabatas along with my lifting schedule and always incorporate burpees into them. They suck don't get me wrong, but they are such a good workout.

That they are! lol. I do the Daily HIIT/bodyrock program every once in a while when I'm short on time. A killer workout in 20 minutes. :-)
  • I have honestly been too nauseous to run for the past week. I finally feel good enough today that I might give it a try tonight, but prior to my little break my pace had allowed from under 10 minutes miles to 12 minutes on a good day. I have also found out very hard to keep hydrated on days that I have run.
    imageimage
  • I've been training for a half marathon which is in Sunday and started about 5-6 weeks ago. I was up to 11 miles, then had to stop working out b/c baby's bpm was extremely low, i had spotting, and low progesterone levels. I got cleared yesterday to work out again- but that put me on a 1.5 week hiatus right before the race. I was running 7:55 avg miles. Yesterday, I went out for a run thinking I'd do 6. My first mile was 7:44 then the next was 9+ then the next 10+. It was a sad and difficult day. I ended up walking home the last mile to barely complete 4. I am REALLY curious to see how my body acts on Sunday. Hope I don't have to walk 10+ miles! It's insane how quickly my body slowed down over the past week and a half! :(
  • The heat will just make you miserable! I am a runner, well have been a regular runner/racer the last few years and I know that lots of women keep running through pregancy but my doctor advises to take it much slower like 2-3 minutes slower per mile. My boobs hurt too bad to run right now anyway I am 9 weeks and I am seriously sidelined. I've been doing classes, the elipitcal instead. Please take it easy in the heat

You've probably not lost much fitness in the last week and a half. A lot of plans taper for two weeks. You'll be fine, you'll just be slower because of everything else that's going on. You've got this, trust your training.

Yes! A post for runners by runners. I am technically part of the December 2014 group, but ventured to the January 2015 group in hopes of finding pregnant runners. Wooo hooo, mission accomplished.

I've always been an endurance athlete. Before this pregnancy, Ironmans and half-ironmans were my hobby and I couldn't go a day without working out. I was obsessed with workouts and would be a total biotch if I didn't get my second workout in after work. As I typed that, I chuckled thinking about how insane I was.

I, too, had a difficult time grasping the fact that my workouts would be cut shorter, they'd be less frequent and I would be waaaaay slower. I put my bikes in storage because cycling and being pregnant just sounded like a disaster to me. Especially since the drivers here in Hawaii are some of the worst in the world. I've cut my running down to 5 days a week, and my pace dropped from 7:30 to a 9:45 pace within the first month. Now that I'm in my second month, the pace dropped even more - I'm guessing somewhere in the mid to high tens? In a bitch fit, I flew my garmin under my bed, and I haven't used it since. My runs feel a lot more enjoyable, and I feel less stressed about missing a workout because there's a freakin amazing baby growing in me. I've come to terms with the fact that I will gain weight, that I will be utterly exhausted, and that ironmans will be put on the back burner for many, many, many years.

I've got to admit that it is a liberating feeling. I feel free (and fat. Bleh!)

Oh, and now I take a gel on a 5 mile run. Pre-pregnancy I could go 10 miles before even thinking about a gel. Now 10 miles is basically an ironman for me, and it's basically impossible.

I haven't yet used gels because I never went far enough to need them yet since I'm so new, but I'm wondering with the heat and the pregnancy if I should start on my five milers even if I am walking more than running. What gels do you prefer with your pregnancy I wouldn't even know where to begin looking and since my tastes are everywhere right now I'm nervous to just pick one and hope all goes well lol
  • I'm 7 weeks 2 days now. I've kept my mileage the same, but toned down the running to a 10 minute mile pace. I was doing interval/speed work and I've cut that out.
BFP: 5/10/14 after 14 cycles of trying!
    EDD: 1/21/15
    5/12 1st beta: 28
    5/14 2nd beta: 87.5
5/23: 3rd beta: 4000.6 + saw gestational sac and yolk sac
5/30: 4th beta: 17,852 + saw fetal pole and heard heartbeat! 127 BPM!
  • Just going from cool weather to hot weather can wreak havoc on times. I did a half marathon one weekend at about 11 min mile pace in cool temps. The next weekend the temp went up about 15+ degrees and I couldn't even run a full mile without huffing and puffing at like a 13+ pace. Add pregnancy to that and my endurance was shot. Running in the morning when temps arm lower definitely makes a huge difference.

  • Happy to see there are more running mama-to-bes :) I am training for a triathlon filled summer. My first is this weekend then again July 13 and Aug 3. So far my swim and bike have been great but my running is a little on the slow side. I am used to competing around 23 min 5k... I am hoping to break 28 this weekend. I am trying not to focus on my running time and remind myself that I am running for two... But spectators don't know my secret!! Lol I worry too much
  • @TiffanyJill my doctor talked me out of tris this summer!! She told me falling off the bike was too real of a possibility. But our roads here are AWFUL and full of potholes and the drivers are not bike friendly at all. I was really saddened by her telling me this because I really wanted to do my first tri pregnant. I thought it would be fun.

  • I'm so happy to see there are so many pregnant runners in our group! Yay! thank you all for the support and the answered questions. I really appreciate it. It's cool that we can all go through this at the same time and talk to each other about things we're experiencing etc.
  • @kaylak1987 I'd definitely ask your OB about taking a gel here and there. I will warn you though even when I'm not pregnant, the gels aren't the greatest taste or consistency. I've tried every gel out there and the only one that I can take without feeling gross is the strawberry banana flavor by GU.

    Here's a link for more information: https://guenergy.com/products/products-energy-gels/

With any brand, there will always be a selection of gels that have caffeine so be careful as to which flavor you choose. They usually say "caffeine" on the packaging.

@TiffanyJill - will your first tri be a sprint? I'm a triathlete and absolutely love the sport. Unfortunately, because of my craziness and obsession with it, my Dr. gave me a big fat "NO" when I asked her if I could continue training. She agreed with the Dr. of a previous poster - the risk of falling or crashing is too high. As triathletes and cyclists say, "It is not IF you crash, it is WHEN you crash". Be careful when riding especially during the race. There are many inexperienced riders especially at the shorter distances so you should always ride on the defense. Have fun and enjoy.

P.S. Try not to get addicted!

  • I've run 3 races since becoming pg.  (5 weeks, 9 weeks and 10 weeks).  My time decreased immediately when I found out I was pregnant.  Mainly because I decided not to push myself like I normal would.

I am very ok with my decreased speed because I am still feeling pretty good running.  I have a 12 mile race coming up at 16 weeks and will be very pleased if I am able to do it at any pace.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • @nashamber‌ yes, it is a Sprint tri. I totally agree with you, this is the distance any weekend warrior will jump into. My Dr said as long as I am aware of my surroundings and my body that there was no issue with my competing. Although they did tell me make sure to listen to my body. I have done this particular tri in the past and it was staggered enough that I didn't come into contact with large groups of bikers at one time. What a long summer it will be for you not to compete!! Maybe an indoor tri where the bike is stationary?! What are you going to do in the meantime? How far along? I am 7w2d
  • @TiffanyJill Whew! I'm so glad this isn't your first experience with that particular tri. Being staggered is so important. I'm excited for you and can't wait to hear how it goes. It'll be a really long summer for me without triathlon. Realistically, I think it'll be a long few years without it. I'm a long distance triathlete and the training just takes too much time. I can't imagine doing 6 hour bike rides and leaving the little one with my hubby. He'd kill me. Haha.

In the meantime, I'm sticking to running and swimming. I'm going to run as far into my pregnancy as my body will let me, and then I'll likely focus more on swimming. I just made 11 weeks today which means my due date is December 29th. I have found that the January 2015 mamas are much more into fitness (or at least I'm assuming based off of the topics being posted). As a result, I occasionally jump ship to the Janaury 2015 group for fitness talk.

P.S. At a half-ironman race a couple years ago the woman in front of me wore a running shirt that said, "I'm 7 months pregnant. What is your excuse?" I nearly died when I read it and then died again when it hit me that I'm behind a pregnant woman. Later I found out she's a pro-triathlete but still. Those 10 miles that I ran behind her were pure torture. How could I let a pregnant woman beat me!?!?!

    I'm so excited for you!

  • @nashamber‌ "We" did it :) overall I was pretty pleased with the results. However, holy cow this kid was hogging all the oxygen:) from the time I took my first stroke in the water I felt winded! It took me the first 8 miles on the bike to catch my breath as well! Surprisingly the 5k was 're-energizing! Started off a little stiff but got into a grove and started head hunting people in my age group. I was shocked to run a 24.06. I truly felt great throughout. Bebe did first tri at 8 weeks :) pretty ba lol. Next tri is July 13 and I can't wait!!
  • @nashamber‌ the 7 month preggers competetor sounds amazing!!! I look forward to wearing a running for two shirt once we announce. Also we have a melon festival, I will definitely be wearing an " I swallowed a seed" shirt for that race :) I hope your running and swimming continues to go well! As far as your being out on the bike for 6 hours, I understand! My husband is an ultra runner... He thinks he is going to take them out in the baby jogger for his crazy long runs! Lol
  • I'm so excited! My MIL found an awesome jogger stroller at Marshall's for $99 so we totally snatched it up. The thing still needs air in the tires but glides like a dream even with them flat! I can't wait to try it out once the wheels are inflated :-)
