Packing Bags for Vacation!

Our annual beach vacation is coming up in 2 weeks and I will be 33ks when we are there (unless the doc changes the due date once we have another ultrasound, totally diff topic). I have started to pack for the vacation and want to get some feedback on:
1) What is a lifesaver for a beach trip when pregnant?

2) Would you also pack a mini-Hospital bag for just in case? I've been fortunate and have not had any complications or issues and I hope and pray it would not be needed, but you never know.

  • I'd say a big water bottle. Hydration is key. A comfy chair. Slip on shoes. Good book.

I just got back from two weeks at the beach. Here is my list of must haves:
    1) Camelback water bottle (I refilled this like 10 times a day.)
    2) SPF 30 sunscreen (The sprays is easier to put on, but I don't trust it as much. I used lotion before I went out and spray for touch-ups. I definitely felt like I burned more easily on my stomach.)
    3) Comfy beach chair (I started with one that was open in the back at the bottom and my back killed at the end of the day until I switched.)
    4) Good books (Of course!)
    5) Maternity cover-up (I waited to buy one until I got there and then couldn't find a cute one to fit my belly. I ended up with a muumuu.)

Oh, and I didn't pack a hospital bag. But I'm only 27 weeks.

  • I third sunscreen! And water. I get hot so much quicker by the pool now than I ever have. Enjoy your vacay!
  • For sure sunscreen and a nice hat bc my scalp was super sensitive and burned. Also, I have been hearing from my pregnant friends that they have been getting rashes from sunscreen, so it might be a good idea to try it out before you go.

I would also suggest bringing a copy of your prenatal records. We live in a beach vacation town, and the nurse who taught our childbirth class this weekend said that they have pregnant vacationers come into L&D frequently due to dehydration or other complications. She said they end up having to do a battery of tests on them that wouldn't have been necessary if they had a copy of their medical records.

And of course, drinks LOTS of water. Not sure what area you're traveling to, but in the FL Panhandle it is already HOT HOT HOT.

  • To add on to the water, bring Gatorade. It was so delicious when I was hot! I went to the beach two weeks ago and I didn't do anything really that differently than I would before I was pregnant (except no alcohol). I laid out, swam, and read magazines, it was amazing. I didn't pack a hospital bag, but I was only 28 weeks.

  • @shutaff I never would have thought to bring the camelpak, but I will now! That thing was so expensive and I've been trying to find more uses for it.
@sarahg8r That's a really good idea too! I do know the closest hospital to our vacation spot is within my network and it's likely they could get my records quickly, but it's prob that much easier to just bring them.

I did grab some SumBum SPF 50 and tried it out this weekend while at an airshow and I only got a tiny pink strip near my shoulder, either from my purse rubbing the sunscreen off or I didn't put it on well enough. Luckily, no rash and it smells fabulous :)

  • H and I went to Mexico at the beginning of April so I didn't think about packing a mini hospital bag but I did bring:

-2 sarongs.  These were so nice to have

-TONS of spray SPF 30 sunscreen and 50+ for my face and chest (I didn't burn)

    -Hat with wide brim

-A Bubba Keg for water and bendy straw (insulated 32 oz drink cooler- I used to bring it for my cocktails- le sigh)

-2 pairs of comfy flip flops.  I like Reefs.

-Enough bathing suits so I always had a dry one.

    Have a great time!!

  • I would highly recommend higher SPF sunscreen and reapply often.  Im 30 weeks and just got back from a beach vacation.  I used SPF 50, but apparently didnt reapply enough so while my son and hubby were fine I got very burned.  Also take time to relax, I woke up early cause I cant sleep so I got an iced coffee and read my book at the beach until the rest of my family was up.  One of the best parts of vacation!

  • An umbrella! I love the beach and would normally spend all day in the sun loving it! But I find these days I get really hot easily, I don't want to leave the beach, so we bought an umbrella, it's perfect! I can still be enjoying the beach but as soon as I start getting too hot I just move myself under the umbrella and I can hang out all day with our friends!
