Trouble TTC

Back to trying on our own.... RE suggests skipping IUI and moving to stim IVF....

I need to figure out how to do  siggy so ya'll can save time reading my history.   I will make it brief:

8/96 severe peritonitis (ruptured appendix nearly killed me)  and ovarian cyst removed
1/12 clear HSG,   tubes open!  (yay)
3/14 hypo thyroid diagnosed,  treatment begins,  water sonno,  tons of blood, etc.
5/14 submucosal fibroid removed (3.5 cm).    Sitting in "just the wrong spot"  and acting as an IUD

Genetic testing,  blood work,  semen all normal!

I am 35.  Hubby is 33

So,  had my "final" consult post op yesterday.    RE is going out on maternity leave... we need  break so we are going to try on our own for a few months.

I was surprised that my RE suggested we not try IUI and go straight to stimulated IVF,  even though I seem to have plenty of eggs,  and we are otherwise healthy (I could stand to shed  few pounds, but nothing major).

If I am ovulating,  the swimmers are good,  and there are no further diagnostic issues,  why skip to IVF?   I trust my RE,  but this came out of left field.

Thoughts welcomed.  I am reading through others posts to try to get a grip but I guess I was really hoping she would say she thought that perhaps between the fibroid and thyroid treatment we might have solved the mystery.

Thanks ladies.

Welcome. I also really have no advice because I have just started medical treatment. It seems to be quick to IVF. Have you tried medicated cycles already?

  • I, too, was fast-tracked to IVF (though I did complete 2 IUIs). Here's the thing: you ovulate and the sperm are good. IUIs can only overcome so much. I feel like IUIs weren't doing anything for me that we couldn't do on our own. Now, I don't think I could have mentally handled IVF without trying a couple IUIs first.

  • That does seem quick...you mention bloodwork was normal, did you do day 3 FSH and get your AMH? If you have normal ovarian reserve I'm perplexed as to why IVF. Perhaps she is just thinking that will be the most successful in the shortest period of time? I hope your break is restful and good luck for when you do start treatment.

  • Welcome! So sorry about that difficult history of surgeries, but I am glad they found and removed that fibroid!

If the fibroid-acting-as-an-IUD was just removed last month, the it sounds like you have a strong explanation for your IF and it's been removed now...sounds like the perfect time to give it a few months (maybe even 6, since you're 35?) to try on your own or use COH and IUI to speed up your chances. Can't imagine why IVF is on the table, unless you're burnt out from this and are ready for a baby 5 minutes ago and have insurance coverage for IVF or independent wealth!

Thanks so much :)  There certainly are some amazing individuals on the board!

To answer the questions,  yes,  all hormone levels were normal (day three and the other one I can never remember).   I seem to have plenty of eggs as well.   So all systems are normal now.

I suggested perhaps chlomid or something else that could "boost" things a bit,  especially since my husband and I do not have a concern with regard to multiples.

I am hoping that the fibroid being gone will do the trick.   I think I was just mentally prepared for something less expensive and invasive than IVF being suggested.   We are oop,  so this would be a hefty expense, but one that we have been mentally preparing for over the last year.  I am not afraid of IVF,  I just hoped it wouldn't be needed.

Fingers crossed that we will have success on our own over the next months!   I am going to do my best to let go of the $$ floating in my head if this dosnt' work.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart for allowing me a venue to vent!
