I thought this was a no brainer?

And I cannot figure out the logistics of breastfeeding in a moving car while everyone's strapped in unless you have stretch Armstrong titties. It's an article about never breastfeeding in a moving car. https://thecarseatlady.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/no-nursing-while-the-car-is-moving/

  • I confess that I have nursed in the car, though I never unbuckled myself or the baby.  I realize it's probably not the safest thing.  It won't be an option this time anyway, since the infant seat will be in between his older siblings' booster seats.

  • TBH I wouldn't do it but I also wouldn't have judged if I saw someone doing it. Now I'll be judgey though.

  • I've done it, it's not pleasant at all. Only once and out of necessity.

  • I've always been fortunate enough to be able to pull over or planned a stop at a rest stop (like on the 4.5 hour drive to my in-laws). I have to say though, if I were in the same type of situation that @Caitlinrj‌ was in, and the baby was super upset, I would seriously consider it...

I've never been in this position (yet) but having siblings 16 years younger than me and enduring many torturous car rides - I can totally see this happening. I agree with most PP that I would try and pull off somewhere, but if we had a tight schedule I can totally see being tempted to do it while DH drives. I would not take baby out of the seat though. Hopefully I never have to be tempted by this!

  • I can sort of see when you're stuck in traffic and there's no exit. But frankly fuck the tight schedule. I can be late. Nothing is worth risking my or baby's life over being late.

  • I've done it too. Same situation as @Caitlinrj‌ - you do what you have to do, sometimes.

ok, I'm trying to figure out the logistics of this.  How did you manage to nurse while both of you were still strapped in?
  • I should also say, that it was due to one too many times of being stuck in a car with a crying infant that we now fly everywhere.  If it is longer than 4 hours away, we fly. On a plane I can nurse, deal with a diaper change, and entertain the little one.  This is all much harder in a car and for a longer period of time.

The other option is to leave for a roadtrip in the evening.  Try to do most of your driving when the child would normally be asleep, and less likely to be hungry.  This too can backfire when you arrive somewhere at 2am and they think it is time to explore their new surroundings when all you want to do is crash.  So yeah, flying is our preferred method of travel.

I just leaned over the baby's seat and put my boob in their mouth.

Like I said, not the safest thing, since I'm sure then my seatbelt was too stretched to really be functional in an accident, but I've only ever done it a few times in desperation.

  • We might have to take a road trip when LO is a few weeks old, and the possibility of getting stuck in horrible traffic without a place to pull over and dealing with a screaming baby has crossed my mind (because I'm a worst-case-scenario girl).  I have already totally tried sitting next to the car seat in the backseat and seeing if I could lean forward enough to get my boob to the baby while still wearing my seat belt.  Long torso for the win!  But like @Iris427 said, when you are leaning that far forward the seat belt might not be that functional anymore.  I definitely wouldn't do it while flying 80MPH down the 5, but maybe in traffic ;-)

  • I've pumped while in a car and giving a bottle. Pumping FTW.
This is a much safer solution.  Unfortunately my boobs just laugh at breast pumps.

  • In my head, @jensavicci and her wife have stretch armstrong "titties" (omg I hate that word)

  • I always bring my pump in the car on trips. I kinda anticipate when she's gonna be hungry and pump right before. If I fail at that, she cries for a sec while I pump an ounce or two to give her right away and then continue pumping as much as she'll need. This is how it worked last time, anyway... I have also nursed in the car. Baby strapped in, me not so much. Safety fail.

  • I've done it, I got NatGeo breast so I didn't have to unbuckle

  • I confess, I've done it, in our camper, DS was ALWAYS strapped in.  This was after he refused to take a bottle anymore.  Of course after reading the article I can see it was obviously a stupid idea b/c if we had gotten into an accident I could've crushed him.  Wow, I could not live with that.  Sometimes we don't think about certain scenarios happening!
