Is 6 weeks too early to start preparing for baby???

I am 6 weeks pregnant today with my first. I feel so unprepared as we are I the process of moving and I'm a new first-time mom to 2 step-kids. I want to start prepreparing for baby (I'm a big planner) but I don't know where to start? What can I do or start buying for baby or pregnancy now? I don't like leaving things to the last minute. Is it possible I'm already "nesting"? I feel so overwhelmed with all we need to do and buy!

  • You have oodles of time. But if you feel like buying things, go for it.

  • Good suggestions! I got that book last week. It really helps you know what's going on in your body as the pregnancy progresses. When do you start buying nursing bras and/or maternity clothes? My boobs are SO huge they don't fit in any of my bras or clothes already!!!
  • I've been bookmarking a lot of things online. That way I can narrow down some of the items that I like now, and see what I want to buy in a couple months time. I feel like it's helping me figure out a budget too.

I think it's a little early for official "nesting," but I totally understand wanting to be prepared.

I started researching car seats and cribs and stuff like that pretty early but didn't actually register or buy things until around 20 weeks. I'll probably wait even later this time because I'll have less to buy.
  • You can certainly start researching some of your big purchases now. Car seat, stroller, etc. I had things pretty much picked out and then started buying things when we found out what we were having.

Up to you about maternity clothes. Everyone is different, but I started wearing maternity clothes with DS around 14 weeks. Until then, I used rubber bands and hair ties to try to extend pants buttons and bra hooks.
  • Just read and research for now. I didn't buy my car seat for DD until I was 36 weeks. Used my BRU registry coupon ;-) I started buying clothes around 25 weeks, once I knew what I was having.

Maternity clothes, everyone's different. I'm 7 weeks now and feel like I need maternity pants but I'm holding off.
  • I personally won't buy anything until the second trimester, but it's never too early to start researching. Looking into strollers (btw- I hate mine. I have the britax b ready and I hate it. I wish I had splurged on the city select), car seats, and furniture took me some time.

  • I am superstitious and didn't buy any baby items until well into the 2nd tri. We waited until after 20 weeks. I bought Baby bargains and started to read about baby gear around 14 weeks.

My pants would no longer button at 11 weeks. That's when I bought maternity pants. I bought bigger bras around 8 weeks when it became unbearable.

  • You could always start by buying gender neutral things like a bouncy seat and swing. Or better yet start stocking up on diapers! I probably won't buy anything until the second tri. To satisfy my baby shopping craving without buying anything I started a secret baby board on Pinterest where I've been pinning nursery ideas, the cribs I like, and different "essentials lists" from mom bloggers.

  • The nice thing about being a planner, is you can research what you want, then have time to wait for sales and great deals. Then if you see a crib/changing table/whatever on an amazing deal, you'll save big bucks and not be rushed.
  • I didn't read the other comments, but while you can certainly start buying things now, remember that loss is most likely during the first trimester. I would personally suggest starting with reading some books for now and waiting until the second trimester before making any purchases.

Another option would be to start setting money aside every paycheck and either having a separate savings account or putting the money on Visa gift cards so that when the time comes to make purchases you'll already have a fund started up.

I just try to think about how painful it might be to get rid of the things I started to buy if, God forbid, I were to lose my baby.

Be careful Abbott buying maternity clothes early, everyone is different. With lo I bought clothes because old navy was having a sale and I sized up one size because they were out of my size and I assumed I'd gain weight everywhere like a friend said....nope, those maternity jeans were baggy in the butt the whole time and I hated them and rarely wore them, so it was kind of a waste to buy to soon even though it was a "good deal". I also ended up worth 3 long sleeved shirts but by the time they were necessary it was too warm out.
  • I would wait a little while before truly "nesting".  With my last pregnancy I started nesting as soon as I found out with the same thought as you, I just wanted to be super prepared.. and who doesn't love a good house project, right? So I slowly began the process of converting our guest room into a nursery (got rid of the bed, bought a used crib and changing table, a rocker, etc.). Unfortunately, I ended up having a missed miscarriage and the fact that I had gone through all those preparations just left me feeling that much more empty when I found out. Sorry to be the Debby Downer, but just wanted to share from my experience. I would do as some of the others suggested, do some reading or 'window shop' online for now.

This is my fourth and last. And I've found some great deals on diapers. Think 3.50 for a pack of Huggies! I've started stocking up on those, especially since soon I won't be working anymore. That being said, if you find something that's a great deal, I personally would say buy it.

  • I'd use this time to do the research like alot of girls said. Maybe make a wishlist on Amazon or a Pinterest board with things you think you'll want to buy. There's plenty of time :)

I am booking marking things I think I might want to get as well.
  • We have started stocking up on diapers and wipes, we buy a pack every time we go to the store. We did this with our son and ended up not buying diapers until he was about a year and a half
  • Thanks for all the great suggestions!!!  I am glad I asked, and will definitely wait until the 2nd trimester - of course, window shopping and price shopping never hurts.  As for the diapers and wipes idea, I think I will start doing that every time I'm at the store, etc.  Since this is my first baby - how many diapers do you need?  As in...how many newborn size, infant size, etc?  Just curious if any of you moms have an idea.
  • A calendar with specific timeframes for certain activities/purchases might be helpful.

For example, at week 13 we will begin buying x and will need y total. It will also help spread out expenses to group major expenses into time buckets. A budgeting spreadsheet might be a good thing to start now as well.

Other things you might want to add to the to do list are things like review life insurance policies, discuss potential guardians for the baby should the need arise, wills, researching and visiting hospitals, a birth plan, researching/visiting and wait listing for daycare if applicable.
My husband and I are both planners and work in the financial planning/strategic consulting world so strategic baby plan is somewhere in our near future. I am fairly certain that it would be impossible for us to have a baby without at least 1 color coded spreadsheet :D
