December 2014 Moms

Horrible headaches and not sleeping well.

I'm a first time mom and I know this will be a stupid question. I've been great up until now. I was lucky and didn't have morning sickness but now I have the most horrible headaches, that doesn't seem to go away. I also have a hard time sleeping. I can fall asleep but always wake up at 2 every morning and when I can fall back to sleep, I have really screwed up dreams. If this keeps up, should I call my Dr? I'm not sure what to do.

Re: Horrible headaches and not sleeping well.

  • Your doctor should be able to recommend something for the headaches... But it seems like insomnia and crazy dreams are part of the norm. Are you drinking enough water?

  • I think I'm drinking enough water. I drink between 6-8 water bottles a day.
  • I've had headaches start recently too. I'm at 14 weeks and my doc said it's fairly typical. Not much to do about it, stay relaxed, nourished and rested.
  • My headaches this time aren't NEARLY as bad as they were with DD. They started around 10 weeks and didn't go away for probably close to 2 months. They were daily and SO horrible. I literally went home from work in tears quite often. So, I feel your pain!

My OB said Tylenol was fine, but I'm a complete nut and won't take any meds while pregnant. Even then, the allowed amount wouldn't cure my headaches anyway!

Then....I discovered Coke. I've never been a soda drinker (unless it was diet and with some Jack :). Someone mentioned it to me and I never looked back. I had one almost daily and it almost always helped. Unfortunately, I've struggled to kick the Coke habit ever since.

Anyway, try some Coke. The insomnia, that just goes away with time as well. I've started drinking more water and busted out my pregnancy pillow, which see to have helped. I hope you feel better!

  • Thanks ladies!
  • I've recently started with headaches, too! They are awful! I agree that a little caffeine goes a long way. I also use a neti pot, as I think some of the pain is sinus related, and I see a chiropractor.

  • Ditto @brittandjp‌ - Tylenol doesn't touch them for me either. But, I feel the same way as @summersunshine916‌ about the sugar. I drink a cup of coffee and that usually does it.
  • @klmurner, Try Unisom tablets for the insomnia.  I take half a dose each night and have been sleeping so well!  :)

  • I've had terrible headaches too! I think they might be tension headaches from sleeping on my side (I usually never sleep like that) and not having the right pillows. I purchased new pillows yesterday and didn't wake up with a headache this morning. Maybe something to try?

  • I will be 11 weeks tomorrow and for the past few days have been going through the exact same thing!! Except i wake up at 3 am and wont fall back to sleep until 4:30-5 am and the dreams are CRAZY!! My headaches have been horrible but i take a tylenol and an use an ice pack as a pillow and the headaches weaken. :)

I haven't tried it yet but my doctor said that Tylenol PM is fine to take at night if needed. I don't know if this will help your headache. I had no idea that Coke may help alleviate a headache. I just starting getting bad ones the last couple of days so I will have to try it.
