Birth Announcements- The Mailing Kind

I looked to see if I could find a thread and didn't see one- so apologies if this has been discussed...

Has anyone thought about birth announcements? Are you doing one? Making your own? Ordering some online? Think that they're ridiculous and a waste of time/money? Those of us with outside babies have you already done a birth announcement?

Discuss and/or show us what you got!

I actually can't believe I'm thinking about this before the baby is born- I'm a super procrastinator. I think I am just trying to keep my mind off of L&D. I haven't put anything official together but have started a Pinterest board of interesting designs. I am a graphic designer part-time so we'll probably do our own.

I like the way these photos look with things drawn on them. Could be funny...I tend towards funny and less cute.

@snuff9861- Yeah, I don't think I would do them if I had to spend money- we'll just be paying postage since I'll do the design and photography myself. And, personally, it is something I enjoy doing.

I have really enjoyed getting announcements from my friends and like @CharSamm- I love getting pictures in the mail- Hell, any mail that isn't junk or a bill!

We'll be sending to family and close friends. I probably wouldn't if we hadn't with DD, but I feel like it needs to be equal. I have 30% off to Minted, so I'm using that site.

I have several gift cards to shutterfly so I plan on using those to make announcements. I will only send them to family and really close friends.

I'm sure I'll do them. Last time I designed my own and had them printed through vistaprint. This time I'm sure time will be a bit more limited, so I might use a coupon for shutterfly or tinyprints.

I have a ton of shutterfly promo codes, so we'll be getting them from there. If I didn't have the promos I probably wouldn't. We're sending them to the Christmas card list, which consists of immediate and extended family as well as a few friends.

With DD, I actually did them at Walmart and it came out to less than $20 and I believe I sent out 40+ announcements. It was really easy to do and I thought they turned out well. I use shutterfly for a lot of stuff but do not have room in the budget for announcements from them right now. Might be worth checking out!

I just made mine from shutterfly last week and they should be arriving this week. Fyi I had the gift cards too, but could only use one on this purchase. I did also use a 20% off code and free shipping. Of course today I got another code for 10 free birth announcements

All of our family live in other states. Originally I planned to order them from Costco. However, I have some Shutterfly cards. So, I have to do another Cosy comparison.

I will send them out, but mostly to older relatives. I would like to make them because I enjoy that kind of thing and I could get exactly what I want, but I'll have to see how things go. Otherwise, I've found a simple plain one at a local stationery store I could go with.

Yes. Love them especially for the older folk.

Costco has them super cheap, like $15 for 50. You can get fancier ones with them for a little bit more money.

I love receiving them, and definitely plan on sending some out. DH is going to take photos this week, so we won't pay for a photographer. Most likely will use Shutterfly too.

We'll be doing our Christening relatively soon (August), so I'm thinking of doing a combined picture/announcement/invitation in July... it'll go to family and close friends. You know... people who will probably see the baby within the first week or so anyway.

I purchased a Groupon for a photo session which includes digital prints on a CD. I'm planning to use that for newborn pictures. I can take the digital pictures and use those on a Shutterfly announcement. I'm going to send announcements to people who attended my shower.

I have some coupons from Shutterfly so we will probably do them, but otherwise I would probably skip it since her pic will be on Facebook mere hours after she's born, anyway. One of my BFFs is a photographer and wants to gift us some free newborn shots, so hey, it seems like the stars are aligning for us to get this done pretty cheaply, so why not.

I personally LOVE getting "real mail", and almost all of my family and close friends live out of state so for them, it will be a nice thing for them to have and be able to look at since they won't get to see her in person very often.

As of now, I'm not doing them. DH said they're a waste of money and the people that need to know about the baby will know via us texting them, and everyone else will see pictures and stuff on FB. We will get pictures on a disk from our newborn shoot so if people want one, we'll give family and friends those.

I ordered from shutterfly with a $20 off coupon code I got in my hospital stuff. I was like $7 for 25. We'll send them mainly to older relatives who don't do Facebook and to have as a keepsake

@satrimm- One of my friends sent photo thank you cards. She ended up delivering soon after her shower and didn't have time/motivation to hand write cards. Besides, people will want baby pics.

I personally love birth announcements (receiving and sending). Did one for both DS (sent out 100+) and DD (sent out about 50). I already have some picked out on Shutterfly and Minted for this LO, I have coupons for both sites. We'll likely send out about 50-ish again.

We've talked about it and decided its a waste of money. Everyone we know has FB or an email address...I just can't justify the printing cost plus $1 per stamp for people to throw away.
