@sallysunrise and others who aimed/are aiming for a natural birth

I'm looking for good book recommandations on giving birth naturally. My husband is awesome, but reading isn't his thing, and he doesn't quite get why I want a natural birth this time. Most book recommandations seem to concentrate on the role of the husband, and what he can do to help. I'd like a book that can give me advice on things I can do personnally during labor to hopefully prevent an epidural. Thanks!

  • Oh you could try Ina Mays books. She has some good info and labor stories in there. It is a bit hippy and they call contractions waves but very informative.

Have you considered a class? My H did not get why I wanted a natural birth at first. We went to the bradley classes and they changed his mind. It was also nice for him to get info since he did not read any pregnancy books.
I found this sheet that I printed out for my H while I was in labor. This way he could look at it and remind me of positions. In labor it was to much for me to think. I needed someone to tell my "try this" or do that.

We don't have any Bradley classes in our area, and while he's supportive of my choice, he doesn't seem willing to help me prepare for it. But I'll print that out! Thanks!

I'll have a look. I can imagine myself getting upset about contractions being called waves though. But any information would help, and labor will be here soon judging by how fast this pregnancy is going...

  • I don't have a book recommendation, but just wanted to tell you that I had 2 natural births and they went great. So it is totally doable. Are you planning to have a doula? I wish I had one, the nurses I had were not very helpful. Good luck to you, you can do it!

I wish I could have a doula, but they're really expensive in my area, and not covered by insurance. It was nurse that told me "I had to have an epidural" last time, because "I needed a nap". I'll have a better birth plan this time, and I'll talk it over with my doctor and hospital staff.

  • We took a hypnosis birth class. There's a book and some meditation CD that accompany the class.
They do call contractions waves or surges, and when I first heard/ read that I rolled my eyes. But it is just a way to get you to not think about the negative connotations associated with the word "contraction". At the very least, I chuckled a little when a tsunami hit.

  • Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, for sure! Definitely lots of hippie lingo, but you can just roll your eyes and keep going. :P The Hypnobirthing books are great too! (And you don't have to want to be "hypnotized" to use their methods. Lots of great relaxation stuff!)

Also, see if you can find a doula who's working on her certification. Many doulas work for much smaller fees than average (some even for free!) while they gather the experience they need to certify. The way to do this would be to google for doula trainers in your area, contact them and ask for contact info for their most recent trainees. Say that you are on a tight budget and you'd love to help a new doula out gaining some experience.

PM me anytime! You can so do this!!

  • Thanks everyone for the advice and the support. I'll get the Guide to Childbirth for myself. I also love the idea of having him watch The Business of Being Born, he really enjoys watching documentaries. I'm just worried I'll get scared watching it...

You'll get angry and feel fired up to take charge of YOUR birth! It's on netflix if you have that streaming. Definitely a great tool to get hubby on board! My brother and SIL are pregnant and he was kind of the same way; very supportive of her choices, but just not all that interested in the whole process, the "hows" or the "whys". They watched it on Netflix and man, he was pissed! I quite enjoyed his reaction. :P He's fully on board now!
