Super anxious to take baby out

I feel like I need to get out if the house but I am extremely anxious about doing so with my 3.5 week old. We have gone to the park and out to pick up take out and she almost always cries and wants to nurse.
I know that I need to just get over the whole nursing in public thing, and that all babies cry it's not the end if the world but my fear is keeping me from being rational about it.
Anyone else feel this way? Advice is greatly appreciated.

  • I feel the same way!  Eventually we will get over it!   I can't nurse in public because I'm still new to it and NEED the pillow support!

  • I felt the same way. My fear was actually if I forgot him somewhere.

But I just had to get out to figure out this new way of life.

I'm super modest in public and always am covered up. I don't even pee in front of DH. Or nurse in front of family. But baby needs to eat so if people see a nip slip oh wells. You kinda just do it. DS hates a cover so I'd rather flash than deal with a mad baby.

Whip it out and don't feel ashamed. Your a momma and everyone's been there done that in some form!
  • I'm ok with nursing in public but mine ways starts screaming in stores. We are going to try baby wearing next I guess because I am so embarrassed when he's screaming in the stroller. He sweats a ton in my ktan though :-/
  • It will take some getting used to but you can't be a prisoner in your house! I've had to NIP a few times and it wasn't as big a deal as I thought. Once was the other day. We went to the zoo with some friends and their LOs. Of course DD woke screaming after 20 min of walking around so I found a bench in the shade and whipped it out. I covered her with a light muslin blanket. No one even bat an eye. So you can do it! Stick to kid friendly places in the beginning (zoo, park, etc) and PRACTICE! Good luck!

  • I just try to make sure my girls are both well fed and ready to go before we head out.  If they are moving in the stroller then they are both pretty quiet.  I have not nursed in public either.  I bring bottles for the longer outings to public places.  I have not taken them out on my own (except for one walk around the neighborhood), and have only just started going out with them this week, since I have my mother and sister in law visiting to help me with our twins.  I started with quick outings  like grocery store and moved up to a full afternoon of walking through shops in a nearby town.  They are 5 weeks tomorrow (born at 36 weeks), and the full afternoon was a bit much for us...maybe more me than them since I am still recovering from/dealing with sleep deprivation.

  • I get everything ready so I can nurse the baby and go. Sometimes he wakes and I give him the pacifier if I'm almost done. Otherwise I just nurse him. I nurse at my nephews baseball games and just use a light blanket to cover up. The only one that said anything was my 5 year old nephew who yelled out "you're feeding from your breast?!". He thinks it is a little weird that babies drink from my boobs but he is a little boy so it was hysterical. This is also the same little boy who said breast feeding was my super power during a fill in the blank game. I would go crazy staying in for 3 weeks. If you plan to BF for a while, you better get used to it! It's a lot easier than taking a bottle and worrying about getting engorged/needing to pump.

So do you just prop the baby up with your arms? Doesn't your arm start to hurt after a while? My LO can eat for 20+ minutes and he is pretty heavy.

Also, he come on and off the boob a few times, especially when the milk comes out forcefully in the beginning of the feed. Then milk sprays everywhere and this can be very embarrassing. What do you do to prevent this? I am anxious to nurse in public for this reason.

Was just about to ask this. My LO makes a mess nursing. She rubs her face in my leaking nipple and makes a production out of eating. She gets sprayed in the face when she pulls off or drools milk down my shirt when she gets too much.
  • Maybe you are opposed to this, but if bf'ing in public isn't your thing, what about pumping and taking a bottle with you? I did that this past weekend and ended up feeding her for a good 30mins in a store. It wasn't inconvenient at all and we got to stay out for another hour or so afterward.

I use my arm but most benches/chairs have arm rests. Sometimes my arm does get tired. You could even use your diaper bag to rest your arm or the car seat. My LO also comes on and off a few times sometimes until we get a good latch. I cover using a receiving blanket which I also use to wipe off milk with. I use a shield so I always need something to wipe that off with. If you spray, just use the blanket or a burp cloth to wipe up the milk.
