Pumpers...How much milk in fridge?

I am currently nursing and we are giving 1-2 bottles a day of breast milk so MH can also feed her.

My question is how much milk do you keep in fridge ready to go fir daily feeds? I know I will want to freeze some as well but I'm just trying to wrap my head around the whole pumping thing...

Re: Pumpers...How much milk in fridge?

  • I have around 4-7 oz in the fridge at any given time.

I EBF but pump occasionally very few days and have between 3-9 oz in the fridge. However we don't do any bottle feeds, only tried once. I freeze everything and have over 100oz at 4 weeks. I've dealt with an oversupply at the beginning though. With DS1 I never had this issue and was having to supplement for milk supply issues!

  • I EP and have anywhere from 10-15 oz in the fridge.
  • Probably around 10 oz at a time. If i build up to 15 oz then I put some in the freezer.
  • I have 18oz right now... But I don't know what I'm doing either, I'll probably start freezing some sooner than later

I have been doing a slightly opposite approach- I know I need to get a stash for some photog gigs we have so I pump 2x a day after a feeding and store all in the freezer except each day I hold back 2.5-3oz for a bottle for the day that we started at 3 weeks. She still only eats 2-3 ounces per feeding so I freeze in 3oz increments too and have 39 ounces so far.

  • I have 4oz in the fridge now but around 70 or so, maybe more, in the freezer. I figure I could just pull from the freezer stash if I need to so I don't normally keep a lot in the fridge.

  • Question: I pumped for the first time on Monday. The milk went immediately into the fridge. I looked at it today and there seems to be a film across the top. Normal? Does that go away once I heat it up or do I toss it? It was my first pump and it's only 2 oz....

That's just the fat, it will separate when cold. We usually run our bottles under very hot water just until the fat mixes back in.

  • I keep 6-7 bottles in the fridge at a time, every time I pump, I save one to put in the fridge and then freeze one.

And be sure to shake cold breast milk extremely well before you transfer it to another container to freeze. That fat is essential, and you don't want to leave it in the container and just feed the sugary milk.

Actually you should NEVER shake breastmilk. You should gently swirl the bottle until the fat is incorporated.

I pump 2-3x/day and get anywhere from 10-15oz. I have about 25-30oz in the fridge. All this is actually going to my 16 month old though, not the newborn who I EBF. Haven't done a bottle with him yet.

Meh, the compounds that are damaged by shaking are also similarly damaged by freezing.  So the shaking rule really only applies to fresh milk.  The nutritional value isn't changed; some of the enzymes are broken down.

I pump 3x/day and store in the fridge until I have 6oz (I freeze in 6oz bags).  2 of the pumps/day go directly to LO though, since we're adding formula and iron to 2 feeds per day per his NICU discharge instructions.  I probably have about 400oz in the freezer, but I EPed in the NICU and had a massive oversupply at the time, so most of the stash is from then.
