Baby nurses to sleep...how to leave him overnight?

My LO usually nurses to sleep.  DH and I want to take an overnight trip and leave him with his parents.  I'm concerned how they will get him to sleep at night since he's so used to nursing.  Any ideas?  I suppose I'm over thinking it.  After all it's only one night.

I've had to work super late a few times and my husband is able to just give her a bottle and it worked out fine. He just waits until she's really tired and gives the bottle and she usually goes to sleep. He has to lay by her sometimes or rock her a little but overall pretty painless. We have left her with my parents and his parents as well and they followed the same technique. We haven't left her overnight but it's just that we get home well after her bedtime but same idea.

  • I wish DS would take a bottle. He used to, and now I have no clue what happened but he'll flat out refuse.
OK DD just started doing the same thing! Took the bottle starting 1 month old and at 8 months she just refused. Have you tried putting milk in sippy cup? It helped us some. Or switch to bigger nipple
  • I've been thinking this too today.. My DD never uses a bottle and never has. I've never left her over night, but when I left her for a couple hours she was hysterical and would not drink from the bottle.

We were thinking about leaving her with my sister Saturday night but I'm so nervous! My sister keeps reassuring me that it's only one night and she'll figure sleep out if she's tired enough. My main concern would be that she will go so hungry until I pick her up than I would feel like a huge asshole for leaving her.

Thanks ladies! He does take a bottle and DH used to rock him to sleep with some success. I guess when he is tired they can give him a bottle in a dark room and try rocking him. He tends not to sleep well when there is excitement around or in a new place but @SweetC80 I hope I'll be surprised too. I'll just keep telling myself it's only one night...it's only one night lol.

We will probably just go for dinner and come back home. So I can pump here. For Valentine's day we went out and I didn't nurse or pump for 8 hours. It was sooo painful! ! I learned my lesson.

  • A manual pump is perfect for this sort of thing. Fits in your purse, keep the bottle in there till you return to your hotel (out dump if you are drinking heavily).
Do you have any other rituals in your bedtime routine? If you have them do the same routine as closely as possible to usual that could help, too.
