Has your LO been sick yet?

edited June 2014 in March 2014 Moms
I tried searching on this board for this topic and didn't find much.

I am pretty sure LO got DH's cold and I am a little freaked out. His nose is all runny and there's a ton of junk in it. I'm worried about his breathing. We are seeing the nurse today, but in the meantime for those of you who have already experienced this, any words of advice? DS is 10 weeks.

She got a cold at 4 weeks thanks to her big brother. Run a cool most humidifier, use saline and the the snot sucker, and when you shower bring her in, it will loosen the snot.

    Definitely watch her breathing though.

The nice thing was she was over it in about 4 days.

  • Yep, it wasn't sooooo bad. She had a little bit of a rattle on her chest, but it was mainly due to the snot! I kept clearing her nose, showered with her and winded her well after drinking. Also woke her more regularly in the night so we could clear her nose, feed her (to keep her nice and hydrated) and wind her well to shift some more mucous. Hope they're better soon!

One of the twins was hospitalized at 3 weeks with RSV. We took him in quickly because his breathing turned rough really fast and there was no time for home treatment. PPs gave you some good suggestions. If your LO has chest congestion our respiratory therapist at the hospital suggested patting their back with your hand cupped a little bit as that might help loosen things up (about the pressure you would use to burp them). I hope he feels better soon!

  • I chose "other illness" because all she had was nose congestion. It wasn't ever runny, she didn't have a fever, just an overproduction of nose mucus. I guess that may be considered a cold. My bad! It also only lasted 2 days, and the days weren't consecutive.

  • DD got a cold that turned in to an upper respiratory infection when she was about 5/6 weeks. We had a friend that decided meeting DD was more important than keeping their sick kid away. I got sick first, then gave it to DD. I sat her in the bathroom and steamed it twice a day and every feed I did saline drops and suction.

  • Both babies had colds about 2 months ago. Rhys was worse. He had a bad cough, was congested and had a runny nose. Saw the doctor and she said to watch it, but called us at home the next day to make sure he wasn't worse because she was worried about him :-S They both ended up being fine.

  • Yup, she just had her first cold a few days ago. She still has a bit of a cough and a snotty nose.

  • No sickness yet, but DH is always congested after sleeping. We have a humidifier in her room, but I"m not sure how much it helps. It's yet another thing the doctor said she should grow out of!
  • Blah--little guy has his second cold right now. He got a fever with the first at 9wks so we had to go to the hospital. He's gotten them from big sister--she's been sick 3x since he's been born which is crazy considering that she had only been sick twice before he got here. :/

  • He got a cold the week of his 2 month shots appointment. My husband came home from work with a sore throat thanks to a cold that was going around and BOOM the baby got it. Thankfully no fever, but he did have the stuffy nose and cough. Saline drops and the nose-bulb thingy were great for getting out the boogers. At night I would give him a bath with an aromatherapy soap which relaxed him and I used a humidifier at night. Little guy got over it in a few days.

  • We are dealing with some pretty good nose mucous right now. I haven't quite determined if it is a cold yet. I was attributing it to my still eating dairy because his poop was a little stringy.

DD had a 102 degree fever that ended up being from a UTI when she was 2 weeks old. She spent two nights in the hospital... She also tested positive for the corona virus, a virus that causes a cold, but she didn't have any symptoms from that.
She also has reflux--is that considered an illness?

  • Yes when he was a week old. Use saline solution and snot sucker. Slept with him in a recliner so he could get some rest. He wasn't able to breathe well laying on his back.

  • Thanks everyone for the tips. I started using saline drops, a humidifier and the nose frida yesterday. Interestingly, the nurse doesn't think it's a cold yet so that's good. He seems pretty happy other than the cough and runny nose so we'll see if it gets worse.
