Coconut oil

Does anyone have any idea if this will work to prevent stretch marks (okay- let me rephrase- to make stretch marks less intense- I think they're not really avoidable). I've heard you can use it on babies to help with newborn rashes and it helps keep nipples from cracking when bf- but wasn't sure on prenatal. I hate normal lotions bc I always feel oily- but I would consider trying coconut oil.

Re: Coconut oil

  • I'm a FTM, but I'm trying Bio-Oil, which doesn't leave a greasy coat. I'm sure coconut oil would help too. The idea is that by hydrating the skin you make your cells more flexible, but it also depends on your genetics, how much weight you gain and how fast, and if you're having a singleton or multiples.

  • Thanks ladies!!!
  • I am a huge fan of coconut oil used for anything - yes I rub it on my belly and pretty much everywhere else. I also do a homemade lotion that is coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and olive oil but it is a little oily for sure

  • I think I'm screwed in the stretch marks department because I'm fairly susceptible to them and my mom had them all over her stomach from being pregnant. BUT this hasn't stopped me from rubbing coconut oil all over my boobs and belly. I figure it can't hurt and if nothing else it will prevent me from being super itchy as the skin stretches. I don't hold out much hope for it preventing stretch marks, but you never know!
  • There are lots of great uses for coconut oil. Look up "pulling with coconut oil". I say give it a whirl!

  • You can buy coconut oil in a tub at Costco for about 20$ WAY better than buying it at a health food store or something. I use a lot of essential oils and coconut oil helps to dilute strong ones like peppermint. I use it almost daily for multiple reasons.

  • I just started using it.  We got some for dd, because she keeps getting staff infections.  Someone suggested putting it all over to try and prevent them from coming back.  Since I was putting it on her I decided to try and put it on myself for stretch marks.  I got them horribly with dd and this time I am expecting twins so I am expecting them to get a lot worse.

  • I was curious about this too! Does anyone know if it can be purchased at Walmart or regular drug stores? Or is it something that needs to be purchased at a specialty store or Costco?
  • Would it just be in the grocery section,  by the vegetable oil and such ?

I have Bio Oil right now,  but its almost empty already.....ha ha

I also use coconut oil often.  I also will eat it off a spoon if its a good brand (good fat source)!

I've been using coconut oil for:
    Diaper Rash
    Lotion (Me and DS)
    Diluting Essential Oils
    In Smoothies
    In my Coffee
    Sunscreen
    Cooking

I use it multiple times a day!

My favorite brand is Nutiva. (Amazon or in bulk with friends) Good stuff.  I always buy organic but Nutiva is the only brand that I will actually eat. It has a slight coconut taste/smell. Some brands come off more waxy if that make sense.

Edit: add more info and spelling!

  • I think it could work as well as anything else.  I don't see why not.  I've been using Breast & Belly Balm from a local herbalist.  she has an online store.  It's a little pricey but I like supporting her shop and the stuff has a nice smell to it.

Herbs from the Labyrinth - If you want to check out her stuff, she has a lot of neat products.  Including "Monster Be Gone" spray for your kids' room :-)

  • I tried all kinds of oils and creams for stretch marks and I still got stretch marks from my pregnancies. I'm going the coconut oil route this time bc I already use it as a moisturizer and its not as pricey as the creams and oils that didn't work in the past. I figure I'm doomed to get them anyways, hopefully it helps a little and if not, at least I get to smell like a coconut macaroon after using it!  :D

  • I got stretch marks at the VERY end with DD, you know that point when you don't think you can get any bigger.  And then you do.
But I love coconut oil, I keep some in the kitchen and in the bathroom.  I bought mine at Target where all the other cooking oils and such are, and it is organic.
  • I don't have any experience with coconut oil but I have used Mustela stretch mark cream in all of my pregnancies and haven't gotten a single stretch mark ( my mom is covered so I would think I'm genetically disposed to get them). I have also had my 2 sisters and 2 sister in laws use it for a combined 7 pregnancies and none of them got stretch marks either.

  • I take a coconut oil bath once a week and sometimes use that or almond oil in place of lotion. I think it's worth a shot!
  • Thanks for all the info ladies. You guys are the best. *blows glitter and rainbows*
  • It tastes amazing and smells heavenly... an excuse to have it in the house? Yes please.

I already have strech marks on my sides, hips, arms, boobs... I gained a ton of weight in a short time frame when I was 19. So I'm not overly concerned since the ones I have don't really bother me. They did when I was bigger but since I lost all the weight, not so much.

Kat Williams said it best I think...
"We don't have no time to worry bout no shit like stretch marks... They came from either one of two things. Either you was big & got small, or you were small & got big ! Either way we fuckin... Either Waaay!"

Love it! So true. Stretch marks are more of woman's issues/obsession.
