Do I really need to toss 20 oz of BM? Kicking myself...

So, I'm on 2 weeks of my 6 weeks of paid family leave as of today. Yesterday I pumped at work and then had bird brain to the max (probably because all I could think of was "vacation!") and left the bottles in the little cooler thing with the ice pack. 5:30p until this morning (6:30a) when I realized I didn't unpack them and put them in the fridge.

Do I toss it? Freeze it?

Man, I am so annoyed with myself.

Oh man that sucks! I would probably toss it.
Yeah, that's what my instincts are saying. Ugh.

  • Loading the player...
  • Yea, that stinks :( probably toss. I think it's what, 8 hours ok out of the fridge? Combined with however long the ice packs last...would be cutting it close. Better safe than sorry.

  • Ugh yeah I would toss it. Sorry...I've done bird brained things like that myself. It kills me.

Was it still cool/cold?  If so (and not room temp), I'd smell it.  If it smells fine, treat as normal.  Bad BM is rank.

    This!!
    I also agree.

  • It was cool to the touch. But obviously not refrigerator cold.

I'm going to go smell it!

  • If it smells funky, toss it. If it smells ok I would offer it to LO, if there's anything wrong with it, she will refuse to drink it. Babies have discerning tastes.

Definitely this. I've had to use the smell test a couple times.
  • Smells like nothing.

Maybe it's actually good then. BM is such a mystery to me with it's antibacterial properties.

I'd go ahead and freeze it like normal, then.  Maybe put a star or dot on the bag.  That was if your LO won't take it, you'll know why.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Just note it.

I thought the rule was 4 hours at room temp but if it's actually 8 hours, and I had it in the cooler, I am feeling more hopeful that all isn't lost. Dumping 20 ounces would definitely require wine consumption.

I remember 7s:  7 hours at room temp, 7 days in the fridge, 7 months in a deep freeze :)

  • Ugh, I don't want to pump today, though. I'm on leave for two weeks, so I planned on being EBF thus why I was going to freeze everything.

You're fine.  Freeze it.  I like to push the boundaries of BM rules, but I haven't had any issues yet (2 kids later).  Smell test has always worked for me ;).
Yup this. There have been a couple times where the milk looked and smelled ok but baby was having none of it. I figured he knows something I don't so I toss it when that happens. Could be a lipase issue as it's always been frozen milk, in that case I could scald it before freezing or mix it with fresh to disguise the taste but because I don't know the reason he doesn't like it, I feel safer tossing it.

  • I wouldn't freeze it though, just me.  I would use that today and freeze whatever you pump today instead.

I did something similar and just fed it instead of freezing it. However, I use my freezer stash for daycare and have to bring filled bottles and since it wasn't perfectly handled milk, I didn't feel comfortable unfreezing it and sending it to daycare and to possibly be fridged for 10 hours.

  • I'm pretty sure my medela guide that came with my pump said it was fine to leave milk on the cooler with the ice pack for 24 hours. Ditto previous posters, I'd smell it and keep it if it didn't smell awful.
  • My Medela magnet says 24 hours in cooler with frozen ice packs.

  • I would drink 20 oz of breast milk before tossing it. That jank is gold. Given everything you said, I would keep it.

I wouldn't actually drink breast milk, just in case someone thought i was for-serious.
