Flaky skin....

My LO is 17 days old and has flaky, dry skin. It's mainly on his hands and feet. For those of you who are experiencing the same thing, are you doing anything for it? I have read conflicting things. Some say leave it alone, some say put newborn lotion on it. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks!!

Re: Flaky skin....

  • Pediatrician said we could put lotion on it but it probably wouldn't help much. He said it will pass...

  • Our Pedi said we could put aquaphor on it but we have just left it alone. LO is 22 days old now and it is a lot better.

Our little one is shedding like a snake. We're leaving it alone. If it's not something that's supposed to happen then we might have issues. But from what I've heard it's normal and will go away.

  • LOs feet are pretty flaky and hands a little too. Was thinking of trying a little baby lotion but haven't done anything yet. They've been this way for a week probably. She is 16 days old
  • Yup DD has it. It is from spending 9 months in a water environment. Pediatrician said it will go away, if I want to put lotion on I can but it won't help. Her hands are normal and her feet are slowly getting there.

  • I'm alternating Aquaphor and Aveeno baby cream when I think of it, because DD's is actually cracked in a few places - mostly around her wrists and ankles - but for the most part I'm just leaving it alone. That layer will slough off soon enough and I'll be more diligent about moisturizing once she's getting water baths.

  • I only put lotion on him after a bath. Doesn't seem to help I just like how it makes him smell

    This.

Totally normal. You have birth to human flesh that was submerged in water for the better part of a year. Lotion won't hurt if it makes you feel better, though.
  • I used baby oil after her bath and it cleared up really quickly.
  • The hospital told us aquaphor was okay to use but to avoid lotion.

Lotion won't help. I tried with DS1 and it made no difference. DS2 is 5 wks old and still flaky and his feet and legs, but its almost done.

After a bath I've massaged him with coxonut oil and he loves it and it hydrates his skin plus I don't worry if that hand goes in his mouth :)

I left it alone alongwith her raging case of baby acne, now at 6 weeks her skin looks great
  • We used Baby Aveeno to help with some of the flakiness on our girls.  I also picked up a locally made baby lotion (sans parabens, sulfates, etc.) earlier this week and that has had the biggest effect.  Though, it may just be that they are getting older too...(5 weeks)

  • Pediatrician said it is no big deal but if it cracked and bled, to use aquaphor.

I asked the pedi last week and said to put some lotion or baby oil if i want. He was like this for a week though so i'm not sure if the lotion did the job after just 2 days of use or if it was just time for it to smooth out anyway.
