Preemies

Preemie at home on oxygen

My little one was born at 32w6d. Luckily I had gotten steroid shots at 26 weeks and he ended up with no oxygen issues initially.  He spent 5 weeks in NICU and had to go on low dose off oxygen for a week which they said was fairly normal when preemies are learning to feed.  Then he was off for about a week before coming home and then the night before, he had to go on it again and come home on it. The NICU doctor wasn't worried at all and thought he would probably only need it for a week.

Now, three weeks later, we are still on it. We did a pulse ox overnight test at one week and he didn't do well so the doctor turned up the oxygen a bit. We just did another pulse ox home test over day and night hours and while I don't have full results yet, it sounds like he is still going to need it a while. No one has given me any more reasons for this or thoughts on length of time.

If your little one came home on oxygen, how long were they on it?  Any tips or reassurances?

  • It's a home testing oximeter that I have having to put on the things for. The first time, the sent this tny sensor that had to wrap around his toe. We weren't getting good readings that time so the medical supply co sent me an adult finger sensor so I could wrap it more around his foot. It is still a pain and I'm not entirely sure it's getting a good reading (the machine flashes yellow some meaning it's getting a marginal reading) but I'm not sure what else to do.

Hopefully the doctor will call today to discuss more.
  • We were on o2 for about 6 weeks post-discharge (close to 2m adjusted age). We had the pulse-ox attached to her foot, and we did manage to get halfway decent readings. Like PPs mentioned, if your LO is having trouble weaning he may just need more time (it's frustrating, I know!), or there could be some other underlying issue that an echo or other test might find. In our case, time as all she needed. For reference, it took 3 tries over the course of many weeks to wean her of off high flow to low flow cannula. They kept thinking she was sick because she kept struggling so much -- but nope, just needed a bit more time!

  • Ds was on O2 for almost a year (he had some complications). Do you have a pulmonologist? I would ask if they could watch you put the monitor on in the office and maybe offer suggestions. And bring your concerns up to them for sure. If they check his sats in the office and they're good it could just be that the machine you have isn't picking up. Those strips are so hard to put on those tiny feet!!
