Headaches :(

I was doing so well in my first trimester, no headaches! Which is amazing because i am prone to headaches and migraines. Yesterday and today i have had a headache that will not go away! Tylenol had never helped me, i hope this doesnt last! Anyone getting headaches? What helps you? Is it something we are lacking or Blood pressure? Whats the deal

Re: Headaches :(

  • I'm with the @FhSTAR81 and @emw87 - a small morning coffee seemed to help me with the headaches that started getting in 2nd tri. (I wasn't able to drink coffee 1st tri due to nausea).

Headaches are common in the 2nd tri.  Try drinking lots of water and adding caffeine.  I'm sorry tylenol hasn't helped - it actually usually does help for me.

Where is your headache?  Could it be caused by allergies or sinus issues (if it is behind your eyes, it could be)?

  • I am 17w and have a headache almost daily. I agree with pp, a small amount of caffeine really helps. OB said a cup of coffee each day is fine.

  • Thanks. Ya im icing right now and it feels good. I also drink coffee daily so i made sure to have a cup this morning and didnt do much. Feels like its at the base of my neck and going to my eye. Maybe tension..

I've been getting them the past few days too, even with lots of water.  Caffeine usually does it for me since Tylenol is no help.

  • I had migraines every day last week, which was absolutely miserable. Tylenol does not help me at all, so I was mostly icing my forehead/neck & drinking a small amount of caffeine for some relief. I also read that you can put icy hot on your forehead/neck for some relief too.

If you think it's tension related, I've been going to a chiropractor once a week and that helps keep everything aligned properly. My neck is one of my major issues, and the chiro is a lifesaver in that regard.

  • I had a migraine yesterday and today have same feeling back of my left side of my head to my left eye. It hurts. this sucks. going to try caffeine.
  • I've also been getting frequent headaches in second tri, I haven't found anything that helps other than sleep and a cold cloth/ice. Drinking caffeine and drinking lots of water doesn't seem to do anything.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions!

  • Yup, ever since 2nd tri started, it's been headache central.  I think mine are mostly sinus related though.  I've mostly just been using tylenol when I absolutely can't stand it, having DH give me shoulder/neck rubs, and I started using one of those little gel spa eye masks that you can freeze-that seems to help about as much as the tylenol.

  • I have been diagnosed with chronic migraines since 2010.. but all meds that I was given can't be taken while pregnant. I know they have some rx meds that they consider safe while pregnant but when we started TTC I switched to safer meds and none worked.. I was getting migraines that lasted weeks on end.. OTC Tylenol does nothing... When I got pregnant in march my migraines decreased and the severity decreased. I'm happy with that.. but still Tylenol doesn't work.. I typically just go to bed close the blinds and curtains and put a cool wet wash cloth over my whole face and go to sleep.. Although it takes me a while to go to sleep due to pain.. but when I wake up they are usually gone. I'm going to speak with my doctor at my next appointment for more tips and ideas.. and if I have to a RX script... All I can say is talk with your doctor and try staying in a dark room and going to sleep when when starts to happen...
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I see im not alone on the 2nd trimester headaches! It is definitly tricky i use to take naproxen and that would help me so much, im going to try to get in for a massage and hopefully that will bring some relief!
  • These definitely came on stronger in the 2nd tri. This last week I've had a headache almost every day. Most of the time Tylenol helps, sometimes it doesn't. I worry that taking Tylenol every day can't be good. I drink TONS of water just as a preventative measure but it doesn't seem to do much. Ice helps while its on, but unfortunately I can't carry an icepack on my neck around all day.

Hopefully this passes soon for all of us.

  • I've had a ton of issues with headaches during this pregnancy. Your occipital nerves are by the two bumps on the back if your head. You can push on these pressure points to try and get relief. I never have caffeine ever and Tylenol doesn't work for me so I don't really have those options. I saw a headache specialist after having a nonstop headache for 2 weeks and he did an occipital nerve block to try and interrupt the headache cycle. Basically he injected a lidocaine mixture into the back of my head and it has actually made a big difference. Good luck, headaches are NO fun!

  • Yes! I'm almost 15 weeks and have had a non stop headache for the past two days (I'm also prone to headaches and I get complex migraines). I'm just trying to combat it with lots of water, no pain meds.
  • I'm a massge lover but be careful... sometimes focusing on releasing tension/pressure in one area will cause more aggravation in the following days.
A combo of chocolate, and peppermint oil/cold compress on the neck helps me most of the time. Hope you find something that works for you!
