When To Buy Nursery Furniture

I apologize if this has been asked before...mobile bumping and hard to search.

How early is too early to order furniture? I think the set we like needs ordered in, and I honestly haven't looked at how long that will take yet. I wanted to wait until 27 weeks to be absolutely "safe," but DH is anxious and thinks we are good to order when I hit about 20 weeks. I'm super paranoid all the time about jinxing something, which I know is silly, but can't help it.

So..how early is too early..?

  • So far DH and I have purchased our rocker and ottoman set. They told us the lead time on it was 12-14 weeks but we ended up with a call yesterday saying they had one in stock. Not sure when we'll get the rest. Our home is in the process of being built and we live in a studio apt currently thats already being taken over by baby things. We may consider ordering things soonish in case there are other long lead times.

  • Check with the store you're ordering your furniture from to see what kind of lead time they require.  I think when I ordered my stuff it took 2 or 3 months to come in, but you never know when something is suddenly going to be back-ordered or some other bullshit (stuff like that drives me nuts!), so earlier is always better in my opinion.

It also depends on how you're planning to sleep the baby when it arrives - lots of people keep baby in a bassinet in their room or co-sleep or whatever for quite a while after it is born, so in that case you would have extra time.  We slept DS in his bassinet for about a week and then put him in the bassinet in his crib after that until he grew out of the bassinet.

  • Thanks all. I'll check and see what the store return policy is. There's actually a decent sale on it now, so I may order and just keep in the box for a little bit if it comes quickly.

I don't think it's too early at this point.  To be safe, you can wait until after your anatomy scan.  If it's on sale, I'd go for it.

Putting together baby furniture is a PITA, so if you're not as big and fat and pregnant it's easier (that is, if you're helping your DH put it together, which I usually do).

  • We will probably order by the end of the month!  We already picked it out a couple of weeks ago.

  • We are doing it this month and the next. We will wait to put together the crib until after the A/S on July 1.
I want the nursery completely done before fall semester starts in September (I am a prof) and the semester gets super busy.

  • After the A/S and we know the gender we are going to start - but I don't think it's too early. I want to have the room completely set up by the end of August because my parents are leaving to Maui for a month and I want to have it set up before my mom goes! :)

As soon as you can! :-) It's fun to have things completed early!

It's too bad Memorial Day just passed--there are usually really great furniture sales around holidays.

  • I don't think that there is a too early.  When you feel ready, go for it! :)

  • Thanks everyone!
  • Honestly, we waited until our baby shower for furniture. The rocking chair/glider we had was a gift from DH after we came home. He had our neighbor (who is Amish) make it and I love it.

  • We already purchased the crib (which was on back order). I found a lot of places say 12 sometimes up to 16 weeks for delivery. I want to actually be able to enjoy and do a lot of the things in the nursery myself and would like to do that before it gets too hot and/or I get miserable and tired :)

I'm like you, a bit superstitious so I haven't really even started looking at anything yet. I just started to map out what we will be able to fit in our soon to be office/nursery combo room.  Our other problem is we don't have a ton of space so I don't want a lot of boxes sitting around until we are well into our cleaning out process!
