Sudden Separation Anxiety?!??!

So Lo is now 13 months old and he has always been pretty independent--will play on his own..and at bed time hes been sttn and putting himself to sleep(may cry or whine for a couple mins) and then go to sleep for the most part for a long long time. Well the past few days we do our same bed time routine and towards the end I go to stand to put him in his crib and he like grabs my shirt and holds on so tight..he starts screaming when I lay him down and then he stands up and screams.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Ive heard at this age they can get so clingy towards you and want to be with you... I let him cio for over 15 mins and then he finally went to sleep but then woke up a half hour later and then he continued to scream off and on for an hour.. I did cave and go in and calm him down and he lost it when I left..then he finally went back to sleep and stayed sleeping...

I feel awful for letting him scream for an hour straight but dont want him to think Ill keep going in there.. Didn't know if anyone else is going through this phase too.. hes fine when I drop him off at daycare but when we get home at night as well he wants me to hold him until he eats then hell go and play again.. where as before hed be content playing and waiting for dinner.. I also told daycare about it and they said hes been the same there and goes down easy and is sleeping the same amount.

I hope this is just a phase!!  I just hate listening to him scream.

  • My son has been doing this too.  Ive been going in when he is really crying (not just a whine) and laying him back down, shhh'ing, and rubbing his back.  I dont pick him up.  If I dont go in within a few min of him crying he pukes everywhere which sucks.  Its been about 2 weeks and ive noticed the last few days he is going down much easier.  I think in our case its just a (hopefully short lived) phase.  Luckily she isnt doing it.

We just switched to milk and she took right to it but he still needs it mixed with formula.  I am curious to see if thats why she is not doing it.

  • We are not having issues at night, but she's definitely become very clingy, much more so than she ever has been. She doesn't want to be held by anyone else, even people she knows well and enjoys, like my mother. She's been really affectionate and clingy at home, too, now that I think of it.

When DS hit 11 months he would not let anyone else hold him. Not even my mom and dad who he knows and sees often. He would not even let me go more then one foot away from him.
But he is So much better now since he has been going to his dayhome for almost a month now and is slowly getting back to his super social self.
