The potty training board is not very active, so I'm posting here. LO #1 is suddenly interested in the potty after a long regression period of not wanting anything to do with it. She just turned 2 in April. Anyway, she will go pee on the potty if she has no underwear on. If I put big girl undies on her she will wet herself about half the time and the other half go on the potty. She will only pee on her little potty that we have, not the big potty. So my question is how do we go out of the house? Should I put her in big girl undies and bring her massive potty out with us? I really want her potty trained before LO#2 comes. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Re: Not this baby related, potty training help
Something else to buy? A padded insert for your regular toilet and a stepping stool if you don't already have these things. Let her pick those out, too. Those floor potties can do more harm than good, as you often have to "train twice", and they just don't fit in with our lives in the real world. (Those padded inserts? fit very nicely into a diaper bag.)
Make putting the "baby potty" away a part of her party. She is a big girl now. No more baby stuff.
And also... do you have an open door policy when you are going to the bathroom? If she sees you going regularly, she might warm up to it, as all little girls want to be like mommy. Tell her now nice it is to flush the stinky stuff down and not have to clean out the potty bowl.
Most kids are not really afraid of the big toilet in and of itself if they have a good stool under their feet, but they are afraid of the flush. So you need to make that the best part. When you go to the loo, when you flush make a funny sound "Baaaa-whooosh!" - (or something equally ridiculous) then clap your hands at how awesome and hilarious that loud noise is.
Anyway, a lot of people will tell you it is "so early", but I disagree. My daughter was doing 100% solo potty trips by the time she was 20 months. She'd been diaper-free and accident-free for a long time before that point, too.
I think you will have no problem having her totally done before your second one arrives!
I had the same problems with my 1st. He would go without problem in his training potty when he was naked, but it was a disaster the rest of the time. His daycare lady had an insert (called a Cushy Tushy) that he came around to eventually. Wish I had started with that!
I don't know if he was harder because of the Asperger's, because he was a boy, or just because he was the first. The girls were way easier, but they also had someone modeling the behavior for them who didn't mind an audience.

Wait, What?!? - EDD 11/1/19
We just did a 3 day method over Memorial Day weekend. We didn't go quite as hardcore as the plan said (we're using pullups for naps/overnight). We basically hunkered down in the house (ideally in a room near the potty) the whole time. Every 20-30 minutes you tell your child "Remind Mommy or Daddy if you have to go potty". If they start going in their undies, run them to the potty. If they go even a little bit in the potty, they get a treat.
The first day was horrendous and I couldn't possible see how I could do 3 days of it. We went through 15 pairs of undies- most of that the first morning. She had 2-3 accidents the 2nd day, right after she woke up so I think she sort of forgot. No accidents on day 3. At daycare, they ask or take them to the potty every 30 minutes and she's now accident free there too. We haven't ventured out for long car trips yet or having to go in a public place and she definitely prefers the toddler potty, but we bought a Potette Plus to take with us if she needs to go while we're in the car or refuses in a public potty, so I can just set it up in the car if needed and it's comparable in size to the toddler potty.
She's gone in my regular potty as long as I help her, she just seems to choose the toddler potty when it's there, so eventually, we'll remove that. It can definitely be tough but can also get better really quickly. Good luck!
