Regular Yoga Ok??

Hello Ladies,
Question about Yoga if anyone is doing this.... Should we stick with Prenatal only - or is regular yoga ok?? I really want to start going, but having trouble finding prenatal yoga near my home, and my gym offers regular yoga classes.
What is everyone else doing?

It sounds like this would be an exercise regimen you're starting, not one you're already doing (and were prepregnancy). I would ask your doctor because I'm sure that some of the poses are fine, but since you would be new at this and yoga really works your "core," I would be hesitant.

ETA: I might also ask the yoga instructor. Maybe they could provide a pregnancy-compatible alternative for you during some of the work you couldn't do.

  • With DS, I hated prenatal yoga and just did regular yoga my entire pregnancy. The only thing to watch for is having to be on your back for more than a few seconds. You can adjust movement as you see fit to work with your pregnancy but if you have been doing regular yoga up until now, then you should be able to continue. I am no doctor, though, so I'd ask your doctor as well.

Thank Emerald - The instructor said I could sit out during certain parts, and offer some advice on alternatives. This would be something new for me in pregnancy.  I was very active before getting pregnant and fell off the wagon completely.  I will do other things as well but have read so much about the benefits of yoga during pregnancy that I wanted to give it a shot.

I would go for prenatal yoga. As PPs have mentioned, there are some things you could do that would injure you. For instance, some of the poses are done on your back, but you should be avoiding activities that have you on your back starting in the 3rd trimester. Also, I couldn't do back extension poses when I was even on my period because of the stress to my lower back. Not pregnant it took me out for 2 weeks. I wouldn't even want to chance it now.

That being said, any yoga instructor worth their salt will be able to give you modified poses that will not injure you. I see you have discussed it with your instructor, but I would personally just seek out prenatal yoga at this point.

  • Thanks Ladies,
Maybe to be on the safe side, I will do my best to find Prenatal yoga and stick to water aerobics classes :)

    I will keep looking!
    thank you!

  • I would say it's fine. I'm doing prenatal yoga now. The key is not to overstretch. Our bodies are starting to produce relaxin as it prepares for baby's delivery. Our prenatal instructor even points out weekly not to over do it.

  • You definitely want to discuss with your instructor before class. Basically, you avoid "crunching" the baby via twists and poses that are done on your belly. I adapt or skip all of the poses that are just for your abdominals. And in forward fold I have my feet wider than shoulder's width to make room for my stomach. There are many adaptations but once you know them, you're good. I will continue regular yoga as long as possible.

  • I agree @‌ saragoeswest. I take a regular yoga class with a small class so the instructor will point out adaptations for me. I also just adjust poses on my own as they feel comfortable. I think the key is knowing your limitations and being ok with that (that's the concept of yoga though right!). It's definitely getting harder to do some poses now so I may consider prenatal yoga instead when my class ends.

I will say that I really do recommend some sort yoga because it has helped me much (mentally and physically).

  • I used to take regular yoga and now I take prenatal yoga and I notice a lot of differences. I think regular would be fine if your instructor shows you alternative poses. I will recommend going to prenatal though because my instructor shows is things we can do to help with discomfort or labor even sleep positions. It's also a way to meet other moms. Hope you find what you are looking for.
