18 weeks and no movement felt....

I am 18 weeks and I have yet to feel anything. This is the first time that I have made it this far in a pregnancy. I am worried that something is wrong. I am trying not to be so worried but I cannot help it. After going through a miscarriage the first time, everything scares me.

  • I asked my Dr this at my appt the other day. Im also 18 weeks and still cant distinguish baby from gas, i started off with extra weight on my belly tho. I was worried too but she found the heartbeat right away. She said often women come out of their 20 wk u/s so relieved because they havent been able to feel movement yet. Im sure everything is just fine. I know im lookin forward to 25+ weeks when i can feel baby often..
  • I have also read it takes longer especially if your ftm. normally not until 20weeks like butterflies in your tummy.

A co-worker didn't feel hers till around 22-24 her placenta is backwards. I don't remember exact name.

I agree if worried contact for doppler

I didn't feel anything with DS until I was past 20 weeks, and even then it was faint and intermittent.  The only reason I have felt anything this time around is because I know what to "look" out for.  I recognize a small twinge as the baby.  Otherwise, I would just think it was gas.

It is totally normal not to feel anything at 18 weeks.

  • I'm a FTM too, but I am in my 18th week and I feel nothing either.  I think it's normal (or so I've been told).

Don't worry, it's still early. Some women don't feel movement until 25 weeks!

I'm a STM, over 17 weeks, still haven't really felt much movement. (A couple "maybe that's baby", but nothing I'm 100% sure on yet.) I know baby's doing fine in there because I have a doppler.

With DS, I didn't really feel movement until 19 weeks.

  • i have beenthinking the same thing. so many other ladies say they can feel the baby but i haven't yet and i'll be 19 weeks on thursday. i definitely feel stuff going on but i think it's either gas or food or stretching. i guess i just don't know what i'm feeling for also. someone recommended pressing down where the baby is but i tried and it didn't seem to work. trying to stay positive!

  • Do you know where your placenta is placed? Anterior (in front of baby) or posterior (behind baby) with my DD I had an anterior placenta and didn't feel movement till 21 weeks. My doctor said an anterior placenta is like having a pillow in front of baby so it makes it harder to feel movements early on.

Honestly though either way at 18 weeks I wouldn't be to worried you will feel baby soon.

  • Yep, agree with everyone else.  I'm almost 19w and have felt a few things that are MAYBE??  the baby, but maybe not.  Totally not a cause for concern at all!

  • Just as everyone said, totally normal. I didn't feel ds until about twenty weeks. That being said I've felt this lo quite a bit already at almost 15 weeks. I chalk it up to being a second time mom and my uterus placement this time. It's not very hard, but last night man baby was partying in there.

  • I had a ultrasound at 17 weeks and the baby was stretching and flopping around all in there and I felt nothing. I was in awe and said I wish I could feel that. The tech said well the baby is still really small at this point Ha! So I would say it's probably normal not to feel anything yet.
  • I think I was 21 weeks with my first...no worries!!

I agree with all the previous posters.  It's early days yet.  One of my pregnancy books mentioned that if you wanted to "try to feel something" you could drink a large glass of cold orange juice and then lay down really still for a while and you might begin to recognize some flutters.   If you don't feel anything, the book said not to worry as it is early and the placenta may be anteriorly placed.

  • Still WAY too early. Just because someone else has had movement doesn't mean it's normal. Even once you do feel movement it may only be once a day. That's all the dr expects until 24w.

  • I didn't feel any of my kids move until around 18-19 weeks, I'm sure it will be anytime for you!  I'm 17 wks tomorrow & swear I have been feeling what feels like a bubble in my stomach for the last week or so, but I'll know for sure when the real deal starts...I'm hoping it's soon!

  • With my first I didn't feel him until 20 weeks.  My placenta was in the front and muted all his movements the whole pregnancy.  I remember watching him move around during the ultrasound and not feeling it.
  • My MW said you usually feel movement at 19-22 weeks. It depends on your body type and where you placenta is. I have an anterior placenta (in the front) so I should expect to feel movement closer to 21 weeks.
