Music for kids

I am trying to not give DS food or bottles in the car because he is 18 months and had been making messes. He cries for a bottle almost our entire hour-long ride. It's been about 2 weeks of that.

My mom gave me a CD that she said DS loves, and sure enough, it stops him from crying just as effectively as a bottle would. This is "Hickory Dickory Dock" and other nursery rhyme songs sung by kids, but it is almost as obnoxious as listening to DS cry.

So my question is, do you listen to kids music, and if so, do you have a recommendation for something that's not annoying? I've tried starting with the kid music and then switching it over to mine (rock/pop), and DS cries when I switch it. Or should I just ignore the crying, and maybe he'll learn to like my music and not cry for a bottle?

I use Rhapsody in the car and it has some not terribly annoying Sesame Street albums I put on when it seems like tantrums are coming. They're pretty easy to tune out. Usually we listen to my music though. Whenever we go on really long car trips (3.5h between Dallas and Austin) I out on classical music and they fall asleep very quickly.

  • My music or Laurie Berkner.

Or I give him headphones and turn on the DVD player when I want peace or to listen to inappropriate XM stations.

Yes. I listen to Jason Ellis.
  • Sandra Boynton has some cool CDs of kids songs that celebrities sing on. We have Philadelphia Chickens, and people like Meryl Streep and the Bacon Brothers sing on it. It's pretty fun.

  • He's got some favorite songs. Right now it is "Happy", because they dance to it at daycare. Icky Thump by the White Stripes has been his favorite since he was a newborn. I downloaded a Yo Gabba Gabba cd, we listen to it every once in a blue.

  • We have the Disney shuffle cd and it's pretty catchy.
I also have some kids bop.

  • I can't stand kids music. DS1 loved an 80s one hit wonder cd when he was a toddler. Mickey, Whip It, Relax, Safety Dance etc.

  • I was gonna say They Might Be Giants (really really good) and Barenaked Ladies.  O.A.R. has children's songs, too.

  • On Pandora, the station I put on is called Children's Indie Radio.  It has a lot of easy listening music where you could get some ideas.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will check these out. Lately DS has also been waking up more during the night. I'm hoping it's a growth spurt or something temporary and that he's not sick.

Anyway, thanks, and hopefully we'll find some music that we both like!
  • My kids love Disney music. The Imagination Movers and Steve Songs are also good choices.

  • The former lead singer of The Presidents of the United States has a children's music band called Caspar Babypants that's pretty great. I was sold based on the name alone, but the music is really fun too.

  • DS used to scream like he was being boiled alive every damn time we were in the car from birth to age 2.  I just put whatever I like to listen to on the radio and turn it up nice and loud. Occasionally I will throw a Disney CD or a Laurie Berkner CD in to mix it up.

I have been known to listen to Laurie Berkner even when the kids aren't in the car, her songs are so damn catchy!  "Victor Vito and Freddy Vasco..."
