Pregnant after a Loss

Why ultrasound so early?

Sorry for posting so much today, but I got my betas back this morning (they look great), and I'm scheduled for a viability ultrasound on Friday. I won't even be 5 weeks by then (I think). What will even show? I'm sure there won't even be a heartbeat by that point, so will they schedule another one? I have my 8 week OB and u/s scheduled for the end of the month, but will there be anything in between?

I'm not sure what to expect- last time I only had the 8 week appointment (which was pushed to 10 weeks because of weather related cancellations), so they're obviously doing things differently this time around.

Re: Why ultrasound so early?

  • I think it's normal based on history.  For me I have one next Thursday and I'll be barely 6 weeks and they have me doing betas once a week after I did 2 last week.  This is definitely not how it was last time, last time my first appointment wasn't until 9 weeks and I never had anything in the middle.  I think they just want to early monitor to ensure things are going well.

I'm not sure if you will have anything in between your 5 week and 8 week u/s, I guess maybe it depends on how the one this week goes.  Plus your betas are showing excellent progress so they might stop testing them.  For me I have very petite betas, they are doubling but they are itty bitty so that's why I'm still getting them done.

This is why I skipped the early ultrasounds and waited until the anatomy scan. I thought it was totally pointless, there's nothing they can do either way. If it will give you peace of mind, do it. But if you think it will just cause more stress and worry, skip it!

  • I think you might see a sac, but it's possibly that you won't see anything else yet.  My first was just after 5 weeks and I could see two sacs then.  They also wanted to check for OHSS (since I had done injectables) and to rule out an ectopic (not that they suspected one, but it's just standard practice at my RE).  Good luck!

I had a super early one due to a big difference in AF vs Ovulation. Mine was before 5wks, all we saw was a gestational sac starting. I expected to not see anything & the tech also warned me we might not see anything.

  • I had an early ultrasound with another pregnancy at 5 weeks 6 days and we found a heart beat but with my current pregnancy I didn't go until 6 weeks 3 days because that 5th week is hit or miss in terms of seeing things. Even at my 6.5 week appointment the tech said that we might only see a sac. If you think you will be more nervous about not seeing much then maybe see if they can reschedule you for 6 or 7 weeks?
  • @lilnugget19 I almost think I'd fell better just having more betas drawn on Friday, and waiting another week for the ultrasound. I guess I should just listen to my provider and be glad they're willing to monitor. Good luck with those betas!

@bootsorhearts I just need to keep reminding myself that I will not see a heartbeat, and that when I don't, I can't assume anything is wrong. I really hope there's some sort of monitoring between the 5 week and 8 week to keep stress away.

  • @rmpar29 TWO? that's so exciting! Best of luck! Thanks for the insight. I guess I'll just have to be content to see the sac, at best.

  • @kmw08 I do have a kinda strange cycle- usually 24-25 days, and I suspect that I've been ovulating a little earlier than I always assumed. It's great that you even got to see a sac! Thank you for sharing your ultrasound. Did they want to schedule another u/s after that?

I think it's standard practice when you have a loss history. I personally didn't want one that early and asked to push it back until 7weeks. The stress of waiting was no fun but I really didn't want to be in limbo so I wanted to make sure that I was at a place where either there was a hb or not and I would know for sure. However I was very sure of my dates, I was temping and have also always had a very regular cycle, so I was very confident about how far along I should be.

  • From all your experience and advice, I decided to push the appointment back a week. The doctor was fine with that. If they can't see a heartbeat yet, I'll ask for another appointment, and then I have my 8 week appointment 2 weeks later anyway. I'm feeling good about this plan. Thanks for chiming in everyone!
