Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Bed time

Ella used to fall asleep 5-15 minutes after I put her down..the past few weeks it takes her 45 minutes to fall asleep she just rolls and rolls around..any thoughts?

Re: Bed time

  • Mine did too, 5-10 minutes and she was out, but for the past I want to say 2 months she has been taking her time to wind down and then settle and go to sleep. For us I think it's her language explosion and recently starting to walk. She can't stop practicing her new words for a good 20 minutes before she decides to find a comfy spot to settle. And she rolls and rolls and sits up and lays back down, claps, makes faces, yawns a lot, obviously tired but needs time to calm down..she doesn't fuss or cry though so I let her be. But like you when this change happened (going from 5-10 minutes to sometimes 45 min/1 hr I was like what the heck is going on? is she overtired? undertired? but now I am realizing it's just a new phase with the language development.

Not sure how old your LO is, my son is almost one. Just in the past couple weeks we have started putting him to bed about 20-25 mins later than normal and he is sound asleep in under 2 mins. He would lay in bed wide awake for up to 30 mins or more sometimes. I dont mind leaving him if he's content, but I would rather spend that extra 20 mins together instead of watching him on the video monitor. Nice thing is that he has been sleeping a little later too.

steelerbaby brought up a good point. I forgot to mention that when our DD went on to taking longer to fall sleep we thought she was undertired and delayed bedtime/naptimes by 15-20 minutes but in our case it didn't help. We also tried putting her to bed a little earlier than normal to role out overtiredness and again it didn't make a difference she still took her time to settle, it's her new normal, until a new phase comes up:) as soon as I get used to her new sleep pattern she changes it up..anyway  in my opinion, it's worth a try, put her to bed 15-20 minutes later and see if it makes a difference..
  • She is almost14 months and goes down about 830 (otherwise I don't get to see her twice a week) but this is nothing new.. Her eating habits have also changed and she has become very picky
  • DD is 14 months and around 12 months I was able to put her in her crib with no tears and she would put herself to sleep within 10-20 minutes.  We just went through a rough 2 weeks because she was sick and then we had company staying with us for a wedding so her sleep routine was messed up.  We've finally gotten back to the no tears this week.  She has some stuffed animals and a pillow in the crib with her and she'll talk to them and play for a bit before falling asleep.  Her bedtime is around 8pm, sometimes a little earlier if she's tired or a little later if her afternoon nap was later.  She wakes up at 6am every morning.
