Clothes Sizes??

I'm sitting in a sea of baby boy clothes (decided today was the day to see what we have and what we need...), and I'm trying to sort but can't remember:

Is 6mo technically 3-6 or 6-9? Same with 9mo...are they 6-9 or 9-12? I could very easily screw this all up! Lol!

  • Yeah, I say it varied but I consider 6 months starting at 6-9. Some clothes I dont put with the size they say on the label. I eyeball them with other clothes ofthe same size and sort them that way.

Ugh... I needto go thru all of DDs clothes too.
  • I just did this today. I was getting rid of anything under 9 months that didnt fit DD anymore/sorting out the gender neutral stuff that can be used again.

I agree with @Starfish17‌ and @Raesofsunshine1‌. With DD she was all over the board. Some brands listed their clothes as 3-6 but fit her right up until she was 7 or 8 months.

  • DH pulled out some of his baby clothes. So I think tomorrow I will go through his clothes and mine and see if our son can use any of them. I am getting excited. 1)To finally announce name and gender to everyone 2) To go shopping and do some registering.

  • I agree--check the size/weight, but eyeball it. Some brands run smaller than others! And some brands fit your child better than others.

Thank you for asking this! I started my registry last night and while I don't plan on asking for a lot of clothes I know I want some neutral bodysuits and I realized that when it comes to sizes I don't know what I doing lol. I don't want to accidentally get spring stuff for winter or vise versa so this was really helpful! Thanks to everyone who answered to!

  • Yep, think "up to __ months" when it just says one month on there.
  • Thank you all so much! Looks like I have about a thousand 3-6 onesies, but barely any 0-3 stuff. How does that even happen? Lol - the balance is way off.

Also, I was thrilled at the notion of 2 Occtober babies because of the sharing of seasonal clothes, but it looks like DS wasn't in 3-6 until EASTER!!! What a tiny guy my DS was. All of our 3-6 stuff is spring/summer. I'm thinking this whole "just buying a couple things for DS2" so that he has something of his own won't quite cut it...

This.  And it continues forever as far as I can tell.  I've been buying DD mostly 4T stuff lately, but today she left the house in a size 2T tank top from last summer that still fits her just fine.

Gah, I need to go through DD's old tiny baby stuff and see what is worth keeping around for a boy.  A consignment shop near me has a fill-a-bag for $5 event this weekend, and it would be a great time to stock up on baby boy things that we might need.

  • 3 mos is 0-3 mos, 6 mos is 3-6 mos, 9 mos is 6-9 mos, etc.  I didn't know this with my first so ended up with some wrong season clothes!

It really depends on the brand, but this is what Carter's set up is. But really some other brands we had were totally different. So annoying that there wasn't a standard. Make sure you look at the weights on the tags. That should help.

  • I had a small baby and 3 fit him starting at 3-4 months. I guess bigger babies are more common it seems so maybe more find it to be that 6= 3-6 but my experience and I believe tge intention is that 6=6-9.

My boys have both been 50% for height and weight until about 1 year. I think "most" clothes fit them as 0-3 and 3 months. It does vary but I think it is just the guideline on "average"

I also found the older they get the more clothes for them different due to body structure change and length.

And Emerald27... Spit up :p I never end up with 0-6 months as much because of breast milk and spit up

Is THAT where all the clothes went?! I mean, I seriously cannot believe the odd assortment of clothes I have. WHY do I have so many 3-6mo onesies?! Where are the NB clothes (and preemie clothes, for that matter...he was in them for the first month at least)? I am missing a lot, and we don't even have a garage for storage. It's not like a box of clothes could have just walked out. Or could it?! /:)

It probably was spit up and I ended up throwing a lot away that I just don't remember. Lol

ETA: spit up or poop...I do remember some record-breaking, up-the-back poops that could have brought down an army. :P

  • Depends on your child. I am petite so when I popped out a baby 7lbs 10oz who was constantly outgrowing her clothes I just never understood it!! She was always ahead in the clothes...grew out of 3-6 months clothes by 6 months maybe even a little sooner. Now she's 15 months and fits in 12-18 month clothes depending on the brand (18 months Carters, 12-18 month Gap and some 6-12 Gap stuff still fits). I would say just buy what you think you need initially and try to wait until the baby is born for a weight/height/% growth to determine what else to get if you can. My daughter was in 3-6 month clothes around her 1 month mark the 0-3 months fit for only a short amount of time.

  • Gerber is also tricky with their sizes. When buying their onsies, don't go by the months, go by the weight!

My son is 16 months and his sizing is all over the place... some brands he can wear 12m and some are 2t.
  • Old navy and gap run small... Beware! Also @SusieBW‌ not to be a stalker but what consignment shop! I need some baby boy deals!
Its funny that you say that because I love the way ON fits DD.  When Carter's 18 month was too short on her but fit in the waist, the 2T at ON was perfect length and a little big in the waist.  Kids are so different!

I noticed a few of DS' old gerber onesies say "3-9"...what am I supposed to do with THAT?! I need to hire someone it figure this all out for me. I swear that it was easier starting with nothing. :P

Children's Orchard in Seekonk, MA.  It's in that plaza with Target and Kohl's.
The sale is preview for members 5-7 Friday night (but if you show up and fill out a form with your email address, you're good) and then 9-4 Saturday and 12-4 Sunday.  You pay $5 for a plastic grocery bag and then fill it with what ever you can fit.  It's pretty awesome.

My best friend told me yesterday that when people offer to give me baby clothes, that I shouldn't expect much in newborn sizes because the explosive poops often result in things being thrown away at that size. So I'm planning to stock up on NB sizes.

People keep telling me not to wash and remove tags on clothes, and to staple receipts to the clothing tags because if I don't end up using things it makes it easier to return because the receipt will already be matched up to the item. Seems basic, but I didn't think if it so wanted to share for other ftm's.

@heatherjeanp‌ Just a thought. Most babies aren't in NB size but a couple weeks. If you don't get much 0-3 or 3-6, that's what I would stock up on most. But definitely wash as you go and leave tags on everything. :)

Of course, this advice is coming from a mom of a preemie who was in NB clothes for nearly 3 months, so take all I said with a grain of salt. :P

  • Just a when I think I'm ready to dive into complicated things like...how do I create a CD stash, or will we do baby-led weaning, I realize: holy shit, I don't even know how clothing sizes work.
