New teaching job while pregnant?

I  am a teacher, but not quite full time.  I am looking to apply for the new school year, but now am hesitant b/c I am 6 weeks (Baby will come the last week of January).   My current job has a commute  (usually about 45 minutes, but can take up to an hour) and isn't full time.  I still receive benefits though.  I am looking to switch to the district I live in and drastically cut my commute and make more money. I am curious if any other teachers have input about starting a new job knowing they were pregnant...

I didn't start a new teaching job pregnant, but I'm looking to make a switch after having my baby just 3 months ago.

Honestly, IMO, there is always a reason not to change.  When I said I wanted to change my husband tried to talk me out of it.  "It'll be too hard with the baby."  But next year it'll probably be it's too hard with a toddler, or after that I'm too busy with ______.

Eventually you just have to do it.

I say go for it. It might be a bit harder at first, but it's going to be like that eventually anyway.

  • A colleague of mine started last year, took a maternity leave early winter, and then came back to finish up. No big deal. Just try to get an experienced sub who knows the culture of the school since you won't have that information to share with him/her yet. It should be fine.
  • I would take the baby out of the equation and decide based on which job is better for you and the family long term.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

  • Not personally in the profession, but my mom is a principal.  One of the teachers she just hired was about 36,37 weeks pregnant when the interview process started.  Obviously, by the time it came to her final interview, she was overdue.  If you're the best candidate for the job, it shouldn't matter if you're pregnant or not.

As for switching jobs, I wouldn't quit the job you have until you have a new offer.  Other than that, assuming you can maintain insurance coverage, I see no reason to change while pregnant.
