Yeah, another name poll..

I need your help again. DH and I came across a few more names that we like, but my fear is that they may be too "exotic" or "fancy". We live in a very rural area in Northern Michigan. You don't often hear names outside of the regular around here. We came across these two names for Baby Girl, but I fear that people (ILs included) will side eye us because the names don't seem to fit in around this area. Perhaps tell me how silly I'm being, and choose which name you like better? :-/

Yes. If I'm not mistaken, it's the name of one of the girls on that movie The Craft? :) Also it's a name in a song by The Spill Canvas, one of DH and I's favorite bands.

I don't really remember The Craft, but Veda makes me think of the little girl in the movie My Girl.  Who I thought was adorable.  I love it!  Veda Rae is my favorite.  It does have a really nice flow.

Oh yeah!! I forgot about that movie. Loved it.

Yes! I totally thought of My Girl. I was obsessed with those movies!

  • I voted for Vera Sue but I really like Vera Jane. Why wasn't that an option?
  • There was a Fairuza (Nancy's real name), which is the closest I can think of, but not a Veda in the Craft. Vera seems more like an older name for a girl, but I liked Vera Lee together. Were you the person who was asking about Vega? If so, it is the name of a planet and reminds me of the movie Contact. It took me a while for the movie title to come to me and then the thread over and done with.

  • I chose Veda Jane. Two very sweet girl names and I think it flows really well. :)
    DS1 8/11/10
    DS2 8/21/12
    DD 9/26/14
    Baby #4 edd 2/11/19
  • I like your MN choices, and I prefer Vera over Veda.  However, Vera Lee made me think 'verily' and I thought it was a pun/play on words at first.  I don't think they are too exotic or anything crazy.  They are all very sweet.
  • Also loved the spill canvas! The tide is a beautiful song. Veda is a beautiful name :)
  • I like them both (and am very partial to V names :)) My favorite combination is Vera Jane.

I really like Veda Jane. Veda Rae is a very close second. Unlike many PPs I prefer your choice Veda to Vera. To me they sound like two totally different names, one letter can make a big difference! As for your concerns about it being too unusual, I don't think it it is. Veda is a beautiful, unique name and I feel like the traditional middle names tone it down (in a good way). Also, I don't remember there being a Veda in The Craft but if there is that may not be the best reference to get people to accept a name you worry may be too "exotic" lol Just a thought.

  • I have a friend who named her daughter Veda in Wisconsin (so not totally disimilar populations) and everyone gushes over it. I don't thjnk it's too exotic.

  • I live in Rhode Island where we don't pronounce our Rs.  Veda here would be reminiscent of Darth Vader from Star Wars (known in RI as Dahth Vayda).  LOL.

Seriously, though, regional dialects aside, I still like Vera better than Veda.  Veda reminds me of My Girl, and I can't get past that.  I think Vera is a lovely, classic old lady name.  But I agree with whoever said that the fact that the names are not too common in your area should definitely not be a deterrent to you in picking a name - I would see that as a benefit!

  • I totally thought my girl too when I read Veda. I love that movie though, and the name! I dont think it matters that you live in rural America. Even MORE reason to have a great unique name :-)

So Darth or an old lady? Lol thanks!

  • I voted Veda Jane. I love Veda as a first name! Very cute.
  • I think of the sweet little girl on "My Girl"

It sounds like a very classic name for your rural area. We live in a small town country setting with very old fashioned morals so I know what you're saying. I think Vera is beautiful and any of the middle names would go great. I really like the sound of Vera Jane... I guess it would depend on the last name too.

Maybe I should've clarified that I really love old lady names.  DD was very nearly named Hazel, and her middle name is Esther.

And Veda wouldn't have the Star Wars connection anywhere else in the country.  I really dislike strong RI accents, but my mom and everyone in DH's family have really heavy ones, so I'm terribly conscious of it when thinking about names.  We really loved the name Marley for DD, but I eventually ruled it out because everyone would've pronounced it like Molly.  And when I corrected them, they would've started over-pronouncing the R, and that would've sounded equally ridiculous.

  • Veda or Vera - both are super sweet names. MN: Jane. (She can't side eye you if you name your baby after her!) but really, they both flow nice with Jane, and I'm a sucker for meaningful MN. Also I live in rural Canada and we will also have unique names. Go for it!
  • Vera was my grandmother's name, so I'm partial to that. ;)
