3rd Trimester

Braxton Hicks

Not sure if these are Braxton Hicks - but my stomach has got very tight (feels like someone is pulling my skin tight) it is uncomfortable but not painful, but rather than coming and going - it has just been constantly tight and uncomfortable for about 30 minutes constantly now and still hasn't let up. Any ideas what might be causing this? Am 34 weeks and 3 days today. Thanks!! :)

Re: Braxton Hicks

  • Could be BH, or could be the way baby is positioned. Try drinking some water and resting. If it doesn't let up soon, you may want to give your OB a call.

  • Yeah could be BH. I get it too seems like for a long time. I always forget to time it. Try drinking water, walking around getting in different positions that should help it.

    If really concerned call dr.

  • That's basically what my BH feel like. It mostly happens when I'm walking and will let up when I relax. It's not something I can time because it feels constant.
  • When I'm at work and trying to focus on a task, it will seem like I have one big long BH that lasts for half an hour or so - basically every time I have a moment to pause and think, I notice a ton of back pressure and a hardened, tensed belly. But if I'm home and more free to really pay attention to what's going on, I can tell that the BHs are actually coming & going, not staying & lasting for 30 minutes straight. Sometimes they're just 2 minutes apart, so it kind of does feel like an on-going discomfort, but it eases up then comes back.

Maybe what you're feeling as a constant BH really is coming & going, but you're just too focused on some other task to notice when it eases up for a minute?

This. When I'm up and moving at work, my belly feels hard and heavy. My back is tense and achy. But if I get a chance to sit, relax, drink some water...I can tell they're coming and going.

  • I've had this a lot throughout my pregnancy, every time I've asked about it my doctor always tells me it's probably just my body's way of telling me I'm overdoing it a bit (I work 2 jobs and am on my feet for about 12 hours a day). When I sit/lay down and drink some water it eventually eases up
  • My stomach is like that every morning when I get out of bed. Like PP's said, drink some water. If it becomes painful call your OB

  • Yep, I was working tonight and had been having slightly painful(more uncomfortable) BH contractions, but since I was so focused on work and couldn't really time them, I went over to L&D for a minute(I work in a huge hospital) and had it checked out to be sure they were really BH and not true labor.  It can be deceptive, for sure!

  • I'm 32 wks and had been noticing the BH more frequently. It's just your body practicing for the BIG day. Relax, put your feet up, and hydrate. So long as your not in major pain during these "practice sessions" you will be a-ok. Good luck to us all :))
