1st Trimester

Only 7 weeks pregnant and SO HUNGRY!!!!!

When I first started trying to get pregnant I thought "oh this will be easy to control my weight gain". Now I am honestly afraid!!! I am normally a pretty healthy and active person, I work out 5 out of 7 days a week and eat roughly 1400-1500 calories a day to lose a little or maintain. If I seem like a health freak it's because a few years ago I lost 45 pounds and refuse to let my health fall out of check again. Anyways.... To the issue. I'm so starving hungry. Even when I'm finishing a full sized meal I'm still hungry! Then an hour later I need a snack again. I've been chugging water like a camel and trying to have only healthy snacks (Greek yogurt, nuts, oatmeal, string cheese, fruit). Is it normal to be this damn hungry!? Is it likely to stay this way for my entire pregnancy or will it calm down? My husband thinks im kidding when seriously need to eat right after we have dinner. I started tracking calories just it make sure things don't get too out of hand, and I am staying around 2000 thankfully which seems to me like an jnsane amount, but must be ok for growing a baby and maintaining weight? Any advice would be appreciated!!!

  • Hi welcome to pregnancy.  Your body is growing a baby and needs extra calories to do it.  Relax. Listen to your body and keep up the healthy habits and activity.  Ease up on the calorie counting.  Talk to your doctor.

  • The only person who can give you sound medical advice is your doctor. That being said, welcome to pregnancy. You will be hungry, you will wake up at 2am and think your stomach will eat itself if you don't get a snack, you will also have times when eating is the last thing you feel like doing.

Everyone is different. Some people gain more in the start and it evens out at the end, some gain little, some gain nothing then at the end pack it on. I for one gained nothing until about week 25 then went up 20 pounds and haven't gained anything in the last month and a half despite feeling like I'm eating every unhealthy thing in site.

Instead of focusing on calories and obsessing over something you can't control (the needs your baby puts on your body to help them grow) focus on making healthy choices and staying active if you can.

I remember the hunger pangs when I was pregnant w/DD. It's definitely real, not in your head ;)
That being said, you most likely will not feel that way your entire pregnancy.  Especially in the 3rd tri when, honestly, you probably won't have much room w/baby pressing on your stomach.

During my first pregnancy I gained a LOT of weight in the 1st tri. It made me nervous because I had gained about the amount I'm "supposed" to in the 3rd tri so I was afraid I'd gain a ton over all. Things evened out and I gained the recommended weight.

Bottom line, listen to your body. Eat when you're hungry and .please don't count calories. Don't let weight/food become a stress during your pregnancy. Anything put on can be taken off :)
  • Thanks so much for the personal example and assurance! I feel like some people commenting think I am being a moron obsessing over weight - I am not trying to be, I just want to make sure I'm not the only one here feeling like I could eat the city!

My first appointment is June 12, I will talk to the doc about my eating if I still need to by then!

    Thanks much!

  • Congrats on the pregnancy!!! I agree with everyone's comments. As long as you are eating healthy and staying active, try not to worry too much about absolute calories and the scale. They say you need about 250-300 extra calories a day for your little one. Anyways, the hunger does abate. With my first pregnancy as I got farther along I just didn't feel as hungry, I think the big belly was in the way. With this pregnancy (I am actually pregnant with twins)  I feel RAVENOUS all the time, way more than with my first pregnancy. So I feel your pain!! Good luck with your first appointment!
  • I am very petite and worried about the same thing, my doctor told me that 1800-2000 calories should be healthy to maintain an appropriate weight gain. You will gain weight and it is healthy and normal, you seem to have an idea of what foods are beneficial to you and the baby. Definitely consult with your own OB about your concerns.

  • I lost 45 pounds in 2013 as well. Yea!!!! Now I'm 9 weeks and feel like I could eat everything in my pantry. I've gained 4 pounds and am freaking out about it. I'm hoping its mostly water since I already feel like a water balloon.

It's normal, and everyone gains weight differently. I was constantly starving until 24 weeks, gained about 20 lbs, and then my appetite totally went away. I've only gained an additional 2 lbs in the last 5 weeks. I'm not worried and neither is my OB. I just try to eat healthy (most of the time) and relax.

  • I am starving everytime I wake up... I have to eat within an hour or two to make sure and keep off the nausea. its normal to be hungry just keep snacks at your disposal..healthy ones the better of course.  I was super hungry like 2 weeks ago all the time but it has started to get more managable.
