no naps?

DD is turning 2 in a few days. She has been doing a 1-2h afternoon nap. Lately, she would not go to sleep until 7h after she woke from her nap and getting her to sleep was taking 1 hour. There have been 2 days in the past couple of weeks where she just completely skipped her nap and went to bed 11h after waking up in the morning.
She has never had a typical sleep schedule, but always got enough hours of sleep. We transitioned to 1 nap right before 12mo. Could this be the end of naps? Please tell me it is not so!

Re: no naps?

  • My son went through a stage right around his 2nd birthday where he stopped napping. I continued to put him in his room at the same time for quiet/rest time and he eventually went back to taking regular naps. He stopped napping every day right around his 3rd birthday, but we still do rest time and he takes a nap about 30% of the time.

  • DD just turned 2. If she sleeps 11-12 hours at night she will not nap during the day. This usually only happens on the weekends though because during the week she is only sleeping about 8-10hrs a night due to our work schedules. During the week she is still taking a nap 90% of the time. Usually between 2:00-4:00.  If she pushes though and doesn't want to nap until after 3:30, we try to keep her up and just put her to bed earlier instead of letting her nap so late in the afternoon.
  • I'd say it is most likely a phase. Most kids don't drop naps until 3-5 years old.

DS (thankfully) seems to be coming out of his fighting-nap phase and is back to napping each day. For the past few weeks he had been fighting it so much that I seriously debated dropping it altogether, but kept at it and he has gone down for about a week now pretty easily.
