Since today was my due date I figured I'd go ahead and share Tyler's birth story! I can't believe he's a week old already.
Short version: Tyler Justin born May 26th at 3:19p after 11 hours of labor. 8 lbs 3 oz and 21 inches of cuteness.
Long version: I woke up around 2:45a on the 26th to pee, as usual, and when I wiped I noticed the toilet paper had pink on it- cue major panic attack! The day before I noticed I was more wet than usual, and the thought crossed my mind that maybe I was leaking fluid, but my denial brain chalked it up to discharge and sweat from the walking DH and I had done combined with the 100* temps out. Anyway, the pink fluid totally freaked me out and I literally sat on the toilet for 10 minutes trying to calm down and get the courage to wake DH. He was so calm when I told him we should go to the hospital and he gathered up our stuff.
When we checked into OB triage I was dilated to 4 cm and the nurse confirmed my water had indeed been leaking and that the pink tinge was likely from my cervix dilating. The contractions were pretty mild and about 5 minutes apart at that point- totally manageable. The nurse said that the leaking water was our ticket to a room in L&D, so off we went!
By about 6:30a contractions were closer together and definitely more painful, and I think I was at 6 cm. I got the epidural around that time (which was amazing), they finished breaking my water, and the wait began. The epi ended up slowing things down and the OB on call said we'd start pitocin if things didn't pick up. We waited around until noon when my nurse came back in to check me (I was told L&D was really busy that morning) and I was now at 9 cm, with contractions finally picking back up, so we ended up not needing the pitocin. She had me turn to one side to get LO into position, and we waited some more.
At 2:00p I noticed that contractions were on top of one another- I could feel a constant tightening and was watching them on the monitor. The nurse came in, checked, and I was apparently ready to go because she turned to DH and said "okay, let's have a baby!" His reaction was great- he didn't believe it at first and just said "what, for real? Right now?!?" She got some mineral oil and started perineal massage (totally weird, btw) and we started pushing. I pushed for an hour, baby was definitely coming so the OB was called in, and the freaking epi cartridge ran out. By that point baby was starting to crown and I could totally feel that ring of fire sensation. SO. PAINFUL!
I pushed for 15 more minutes, and with the help of an episiotomy, which I practically begged for when the OB mentioned it, Tyler Justin came into this world at 3:19p on the 26th. He was 8 lbs 3 oz and 21 inches long and so perfect. Of course I cried like crazy when they placed him on my chest, and DH got to cut the cord. It was such an awesome, overwhelming moment for us.
Now for some pics!
