STMs: still nursing?

There were a few of these threads many months ago but I haven't seen one for a while. Are you still nursing an older baby/toddler/preschooler? How's it going? How often? Any pain or discomfort? Has your LO been bothered by the changing taste or lack of milk? What are your future nursing plans? Weaning/See what happens/tandem nursing? Any fears, thoughts, comments, etc. about BFing?

DD is just over 2 and still nursing to sleep/first thing in the morning. She seems pretty attached and not interested in weaning any time soon and I'm going to follow her lead. Which will probably mean tandem nursing for a while which somewhat terrifies me. I hope to someday sleep again...
Luckily it's not that uncomfortable, she listens when her teeth are hurting me, and I've successfully night weaned her.

  • I tandem nursed our first two fairly easily, but this time my milk dried up and each session became a huge battle.  She wanted the milk, but there was none...she'd hit me and scream and bite.  Every session ended in tears, so I had to wean.  It's been a month and she still asks to nurse most days.  It breaks my heart to know I couldn't nurse her until she was ready to wean, but I did my best.

I was planning to keep going and tandem nurse, but my milk dried up fairly quickly.  Occasionally he'll want to nurse, but it is just a few suckles and then he remembers that there is nothing for him.  I wouldn't be surprised if he starts again.  I kind of miss it, even though I have/had severe nursing aversion early on in pregnancy.

  • Still nursing an month away from 2. It hurts. I'm more likely to try to distract him with something. But we still nurse at naptime and bedtime and sometimes when I get home if I've been out for a while. We've almost cut out the morning session. I can distract him with the promise of breakfast about half the time. It hurts and I'm not really a fan anymore, but I know it'll stop hurting soon enough, so I'm not stopping him completely yet. I guess we'll keep going and tandem nurse probably.

Stella will be 3 in about a month and is still nursing very occasionally. Mostly when she is feeling sad, nervous, needs a cuddle or right before bed time. I haven't had milk in months though. She still talks very fondly about drinking mimi milky and knows when baby comes the milk will come back.

  • My daughter is 26 months and still nursing. We nurse in the morning after waking up, sometimes before her nap, and at night. I'm not sure if she is getting any milk at all, I tried to self express (just to check) a few weeks ago and nothing came out. She has always been a comfort nurser so I'm sure she would nurse if there was milk there or not.

I can definitely tell the the sucking causes contractions if she is on the breast for more than a few minutes. I de-latch her then and she is okay with it.

I am hoping to cut out the morning session VERY soon and then work on the nap and night sessions next.

I am not 100% against tandem nursing for myself, but I would rather not have to try that. My daughter was a huge comfort nurser, like I said, and was on the breast for hours and hours as a newborn. If this next baby is like that I don't think I can handle the baby plus another kid.

  • I was thinking of weaning a couple months ago, because DS seemed to have lost interest. However, we took his pacifier away two weeks ago and now he is obsessed and asks for "bokie" (?) three times a day! It has been painful for the last couple months, but now this week I have noticed that I have multiple braxton hicks every time he nurses. I plan on asking my midwife this week what I should do.

  • @ColeyJ88 - Just curious, why did you take the pacifier away?

  • I'm still nursing my 20 month old. My colostrum came in a few weeks ago and it's like baby crack. He wants to nurse all the time. We also have a baby doll that he insists goes on my boob while he is nursing. I really don't get contractions which is strange because I was having alot of cramping in 1st tri. There is just some pain and discomfort but it could be more because he almost rips my nipple off with "nursetastics".

  • @sarahg8r I was concerned that it would start to affect his teeth, and I figured it would be best before the baby is born. I may not even introduce one to this baby!

@lizztheo at least he's willing to share! :)
