February 2013 Moms

June 17th, paging June 17th, Code Red.

As in, all the red wine. Alllll of it.

Today one second grader punched the wall and said, "I fucking hate this school."  Yup. A second grader.

Another one slammed his math book in the hall and screamed, "This is bull!!!!!" And ran down the hall. I chased him. Because you know, that's normal.

Do you know what my admin. said? "Don't worry. We're doing PBIS next year."

June 17th is a Tuesday. I will be throwing the biggest bump party in the history of all bump parties. Be thurrrrrrr.

  • This life you're living sounds like my first four years of teaching, only throw in some gun-and-knife pulling and drug possession simply because they were a few years older. The plus side of this is that you do have some excellent story fodder.

I am also cracking up that your administration thinks PBIS is going to fix it all in a year. Oh, brother. In for a rude awakening.

PBIS is a whole school behavior management initiative that centers around the idea of positive reinforcement. It focuses on the idea of setting school wide norms for behavior and explicit black and white rubrics for what happens when students do or do not stay within those norms.

Yeahhhhhh, see, here's the thing. Black and white rubrics are basically things you can wipe your ass with when administration doesn't follow what's on them in regards to discipline. We have a handbook right now that blatantly outlines the consequences for major offenses. Which he has blatantly ignored. One parent explicitly asked him what his discipline philosophy is...his response was, TO A PARENT, "I plead the fifth."

    But cool, let's do PBIS.

  • We had five snow days. We would be getting out the 10th. On that day I will probably cry all the tears. Or drink all the wine. Or both.

  • @TarheelMama202‌ we don't start until after Labor Day, and our actual last day of work is June 26th. I'm in upstate NY, but I teach HS so my kiddos are done with classes June 16th then take exams until June 25th.

Your only option on that day is to carry a hip flask. Actually, that's your only option for the rest of the year. I'll do the same. If we get fired, we go down together.

  • Wow. That sounds awful. I can't even do a black and white discipline WITH MY OWN KIDS, I can't imagine it working with several hundred.

And WTF?! He actually told a parent he wouldn't respond on his discipline philosophy?

He did. Then she trotted herself right up the street to the superintendent's office. Behold, PBIS.

  • Wow, you guys all get out late.  We got out last Wednesday.  We start mid-Aug though.  Thanks to snow days this is our shortest summer in years but I'm cool with that because my kids do not get a long so three months in the same house with very little break from each other is just too much for all of us.

Ugh, I'm so glad we got done last Friday! You day sounds similar to my everyday. Getting kicked punched bitten and cursed at were all daily occurrences for our school. We are doing PBIS so I love that your admin thinks that is going to be the magic key. Dh works in the same school district but a different elementary school and is frantically trying to find a new job. He is hoping I hurry up and get hired as a principal so he can be a stay at home dad and home school dd because he is appalled with the issues that go on is our schools

Sound like you school district is doing BIST. That what we used to have. I have done both and they have their pluses and minuses. Neither of them are magic and will fix the broken children we have. I think being a new mom has made me so much more sensitive to the issues my students go through. I loose sleep a lot more now because of our kiddos home life situations and found myself in the middle of a few dfs battles I would like to forget. We spent the first year of our PBIS training with our consultants telling us not to send the kids through xyz... So it looks like our refferrals went down but every teacher in our building knows that it's fake data.

  • I saw this the other day, and it made me think of you ladies. Ugh, I can deal with the paranoid tinfoil hat people, and people that just don't understand technology, but I could never be a teacher.

  • Eh. Some kids to have unfortunate situations, and it can impact their behavior. But in this case, it's not a bad home life, it's bad boundaries. The one who punched the wall had his parents call and told us that no matter what he does, he is not to be sent to the office anymore. He can't "really be doing all these things" we say he is, and even if he is, we are giving him "self esteem issues" by sending him to the office.

I have no words for this. None.

Of course, some things are safety issues and he needs to be taken out of the room. He was the other day and he looked at the support room teacher and said, "You're not my mom. You're not my dad. So we can just end this."  Which is exactly what he's been told at home.

Oh I hate when parents try to tell us how we should be running our classrooms/schools. We had a very violent 5th reader who we weren't supposed to send to the office, buddy room or safe seat because it would "escalate his behaviors". Per mom. Instead we had to evacuate the rest of the students for their safety. Ugh, it took the whole school year to finally have him moved to an alternative school. We felt very helpless and it was clear to the other 32 kids in the class who was u charge, not the adults. I'm sorry for uou

  • I'm going around with a parent because I have "lost" 7 assignments. Really...June 12th come on already!
