Trouble with Nursing

DS has been a great nurser from day one.. Until now. He will nurse for about three minutes then pulls away and screams bloody murder. I calm him down, relatch him, then he screams again. Repeat. It happens on both sides. He gets one bottle a day, right before bed and it's a slow flow nipple. I know I'm still producing because I pump twice a day also and get the same amount I always have. He also drools milk when he pulls away screaming so I know he's getting milk. Any ideas or suggestions?

Could be oversupply/too forceful of a let down and the flow is too much for him.

  • DS does the same thing and it's because I let down so quickly and he can't keep up and starts... well, drowning  :\"> It will also happens if he gulps a bunch of air while he's drinking - I think it hurts his tummy.
For us it helps with nurse with gravity on his side - I'll sit back and recline so his head is above my breast and he can somewhat control his milk intake. And I take him off and burp him frequently. I never had this problem with DD, but every baby is differently I guess!

That might be your issue or it might be something totally different! I'd suggest going to a La Leche League meeting in your area or at least hooking up with it on FB. Those ladies really know what they're talking about man... :)

Can forceful letdown all of a sudden be a problem? He's been a great nurser up until the last few days. I guess I thought if that was an issue it would be from day one. Guess not!

  • Could it be that with a bottle he may not have to work as hard because the milk comes faster? Do you feel the forceful letdown?
  • I have the EXACT same issue and it just started a couple days ago (5 weeks). He's been such an amazing eater until now. I've heard that as they get older they become more "opinioned" and I'm wondering if this is the issue regarding a forceful let down.. I wear a shield and it fills up really fast and I can see myself squirting in it (sorry tmi). I called the ped about it today but missed their call when they called back.. I'm going to call again tomm to see what they say. I'll let you know!

@Yogini6911‌ and @LaBe44a‌ that's what I was afraid of. He's even getting a bedtime bottle since 2 weeks and he's almost 8 weeks. I guess maybe he's just getting picky. I'm going to stick with nursing another week or so then I may EP and see if it gets better.

@cd92007‌ please keep me posted on what your pedi says! Thanks!

  • This happened to me tonight.  I watched him trying to keep up gulping and then he started doing exactly what you had described.  Turned out he had swallowed a bunch of air.  It took a while to come up but when it did, I was surprised he didn't deflate.

    Good luck.
  • DD does this a lot and it almost always means she has trapped gas. And more often than not she does it on my left side which has fast letdown. He gulps and gulps and you can almost hear the air going down the gullet.

In the middle of the night feedings I never offer her that side first (she's a two sided feeder) when she's coming out of being super sleepy. She does great at night and I almost never have this problem. Sometimes I just find it easier to pump and feed during tr day because she seems more comfortable and I know she's getting ample food and not quitting out of frustration.
