Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC with polycystic ovary syndrome

Me and my husband have always been under the if it happens it happens idea when talking about getting pregnant, so we have never been careful.About a year ago I was told I had  polycystic ovary syndrome the Doc put me on birth control because I had not gotten a period in almost 10 months. 4 months ago I stopped taking them in hopes to try and conceive. Two months went by no pregnancy but I was still getting my period meaning I was ovulating and everything was working fine at least. This past month and a half I did not get my period and yes I did check to see if I was pregnant but no I am not. Now we are just concerned that I will go back to no periods and have a really hard time making a baby. Does anyone have any experience with this issue any advise? Did you need do a more intense treatment?

This is my experience exactly except when I came off birth control I did not have periods. I'm on my second cycle off of BCP and my doc is inducing my period (again) with provera.. Since I'm not ovulating I got a referral to the RE. I suggest temping to see f you are ovulating and if you don't then go talk to your doc. Some cycles are longer tho so don't count yourself out after a month and a half.

Also- what tests did your doctor do to diagnosis you with pcos?

ETA: both of these cycles have been 100+ days and only ended with the help of provera

And make sure you read the newbie blog.. Lots of good stuff in there

  • Have you looked into charting your BBT?  I think that would be a really great next step in figuring what is going on with your cycles.  I would check our Fertility Friend and the newbie blog, there's a lot of great info in there.  Good luck!

  • I think not ovulating/not getting your period is a fairly common symptom of PCOS.  If you go 60 days without a period or a positive HPT, I'd go back in to your doctor and ask about treatment to induce ovulation, like PP have mentioned.

    Good luck!

I'm going to respectfully disagree. There's no reason to not give it a go without an RE. PCOS is not a fertility death sentence. I would temp and chart and see if you're ovulating. I'd give it a few months to regulate before trying any interventions.

I guess I just thought when she said they had never been careful it meant they had not been using any protection for awhile, although it wasn't specified. I was only suggesting seeing an RE because what I usually read on here is 1 yr under 35, 6 months over 35, but if you have a diagnosis you can go earlier if you want to. She just sounded like she was concerned and the period she got seemed like it was a withdrawal bleed from the BCP. However, I agree OP if you want to try on your own for awhile then that's good too.

I agree, I don't think I would go to an RE just yet. Some women with pcos get pregnant on their own, some do not. Has your doctor prescribed you metformin? It can sometimes help to regulate your cycle. If you start charting and know you aren't ovulating, or you are ovulating very late in your cycle, then an appointment with a RE is certainly warranted.
  • Also, OP I am confused why your dr put you on BCP for eight months if you are TTC? That doesn't seem like it is a good response to the PCOS but I could be confused.

Just so you know, this is not true. Just because you get a period does not mean you ovulated. A cycle with no ovulation is called an anovulatory cycle. The only way to know for sure if you ovulated is is to take chart your basal temps and see a shift.

Me and my husband have always been under the if it happens it happens idea when talking about getting pregnant, ... 4 months ago I stopped taking them in hopes to try and conceive.

It seems pretty clear that she was NTNP and made a clear decision about BC and when she wanted to come off to start TTC. That seems like a totally appropriate treatment plan for PCOS.

I agree with the NTNP but then she says "about a year ago she was diagnosed with PCOS and the dr put her on BCP because she hadn't had a period in 10 months". I guess it sounded to me like she took it by the recommendation from her dr. for PCOS but I could be misunderstanding. Also I'm sorry to have recommended seeing an RE already I just thought that I was reiterating what is usually recommended since she had a diagnosis. sorry to have caused confusion.

I would try charting for a couple cycles to see if you really aren't ovulating. If you aren't, I don't see anything wrong with seeing an RE. I went after confirming several extremely long anovulatory cycles in a row, because my obgyn did not seem very knowledgable about PCOS or how to treat it. Plus she started talking about clomid, and I would only take that under the careful eye of an RE. I don't think the one year rule necessarily applies if you have a preexisting diagnosis or if you definitely aren't ovulating.

  • @catlover790 I think the recommendation is if you have a diagnosis AND you are having trouble then sure head to the RE. She hasn't been trying long, and she doesn't know for sure if she will have an issue. Testing and fertility treatments are stressful and expensive, so why start down that road if it may not be necessary.
  • @lilynblue I understand your point and I am not trying to suggest seeing a Dr before it is necessary. Her OP is somewhat vague with the "always" NTNP; we don't know how long that is I guess.

I took her post to mean at least 10 months NTNP during which she never got a period, then 4 months of trying currently, and also a diagnosis.

I have PCOS also. I agree about charting your temp for a few cycles to see if you're ovulating. If you do end up needing some help, I strongly suggest trying metformin before jumping to clomid. When I got pregnant with my son, we tried for 12 months with no luck, then I got put on metformin and got pregnant 4 months later. For me and many others it can regulate your cycle and help with ovulation. Without metformin I could bleed for months on end or not get a period for many months. With metformin I have a 30-40 day cycle and I only bleed for 7 days. The risks are much lower than clomid so I think it's worth a shot. Good luck -- PCOS is a frustrating thing.

  • Thank you for all the responses. To answer some of the questions I was diagnosed with a vaginal ultrasound, not sure if I am ready to try intense fertility treatments but its not out of the question, I will however look into the  metformin  with my Doc and see if that is a good option for me. I do have another question for those of you who have PCOS do you actually have any symptoms?

My symptoms were excessive weight gain and very irregular cycles (like many months with no period, even on BCP). I didn't have any excess hair really, or acne, and I don't have polycystic ovaries either.
  • My only symptoms are my yo-yoing blood sugar and long cycles/estrogen dominance.

If you mean signs as far as physical appearance, then yes, I have them all. Excess weight around the middle, acne, and hair where it shouldn't be, it sucks.

The point here is that you don't have to jump to that right away, and I hope you don't get to that point at all.  For now, I would really suggest you start temping, there are lots of ladies with PCOS and irregular cycles who are able to get pregnant without treatment, but it really helps to know what's going on with your cycle.

  • Metformin can cause stomach upset. Increase the dose slowly and if it bothers you, you can ask for the extended release version.
