Ganirelix???

I will be adding in Ganirelix to my meds tomorrow am to keep me from ovulating while stimming.  I know I shouldn't have, but I Dr. Googled it.  Read about some pretty bad experiences that women posted about.  I'm sure it can't be all that bad.  Anyone care to share their experience with this med?

Re: Ganirelix???

  • This is the one that is a little dull.  My husband does my shots, so I told him that I had been advised by the ladies here that the needle was dull.  He rolled his eyes and then said, "oh, it is dull."

Anyhow, it was no big deal!!

Good luck!  It sounds like you are getting close!

  • I took Ganirelix with IVF #2 and #3. It is a prefilled syringe, but my clinic had me split the syringe into two doses. The actual injections weren't bad, but the needle on the prefilled syringe is a little dull and requires a bit more force. It also burned a little and that lasted maybe 30 minutes? I had some crappy side effects with Ganirelix (hot flashes, heartburn, and headaches), but they got better once I started stims (I was on Ganirelix from my baseline until trigger). You may not have any side effects since you have already been stimming.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • The needle is dull and it's hard to get through your skin sometimes. My husband apologizes to me every time he's giving me the shot. The nurse at my RE's office and I were discussing it the other day. They have been complaining to the company that makes it for almost 20 years about the needles and they haven't changed it. Otherwise I have no other problems with it.

Like everyone above already mentioned, the needle is more dull than the ones you use for stims - so make sure you are ready to stick it in with a little more force. It burns a little, but it was only a minute or so. I did not think it was too bad. I didn't have any side effects.

Unfortunately, I did somehow manage to ovulate on my own despite the Ganirelix (and had to cancel that cycle). I think this is very, very rare, so probably not something to worry about.

  • I also get headaches and hot flashes from it, and since the needle is dull, I get tenderness and a bump on the injection spot for an hour or two.  But nothing too awful.  I sometimes have felt like the generic needles I used for the Lupron were worse.

  • You've already gotten good input, but I figured adding mine won't hurt.  The needle, like everyone else has said, is dull.  I iced the injection site for a few minutes before hand, which helped alot.  Other than that, the sting only lasted like 30 seconds afterwards and I didn't have any real side effects. I iced it after the injection too which eased the burning/sting.  You get used to it.  It sounds bad and way worse than a lot of other meds, but in reality you take it and forget about it a couple minutes later.  It is easier to use than a lot of other meds since it is prefilled. Good luck!
  • Nothing to complain about here... especially now that I take Lovenox, Ganirelix is a piece of cake. Good luck.

  • I didn't think the injection was bad, but it stung/burned for a good 30 minutes after, for me. Plus, it made me very, very moody/emotional, especially the first couple injections. And I think it made me feel the worst of the meds, if that makes sense. I can report that the Cetrotide (alternative to Ganirelix) didn't sting quite as bad after and only made me moody after I had taken it three days (I took it before stimming, so not  sure what my reaction will be when we add it back in).

But since there is quite a range of experiences, I bet if you are expecting it to be awful, you'll be fine and it won't be as bad as you imagine.

    Good luck!

OH MY EFFING GOD YES. The lupron needles suck. The worst is when those crappy little syringes actually BEND because the needle just won't.go.in.

OP, Ganirelix really didn't bother me at all. Didn't even burn. The drugs all seem to affect people differently, so, you know, grain of salt. But I wouldn't fret about it.

ETA: I tried Ganirelix both in the thigh and in the abdomen. I found it much easier to get the needle into the thigh. Also, I did notice slight burning when I did it in the abdomen, but nothing in the thigh. Just my 2 cents.

This exactly. I'm trying Ceterotide tomorrow night (ooh!) because it's 50 bucks cheaper and I'm on the daily ordering plan since my cycle is dragging out.

I did not notice any problems when giving myself the Ganerelix injection, I didn't even think the needle was dull, I just attributed the slight increase in needed force to the decrease in needle gauge (I had been using 31G for my other meds, Ganerelix is 27G I believe). I did notice a slight warmth at the site of injection, but nothing more that the feeling after a good ab workout. Overall, it was not bad at all, so don't worry. Listen to your body, and if you feel something is off, reach out to your RE.
  • Huh, I may be the only one who didn't think the needles felt "dull". I had no problems sticking myself in the thigh, but it did burn and feel sore for maybe 30 minutes afterward. If I was home when I did the shot I would ice it for a little while after. Good luck!

  • Thanks again ladies!!! Just did the shot and it was fairly painless.  The anticipation much worse.  Used ice first and I think that helps to not feel anything.  Got blood though when I removed the needle.  Somehow I always hit a something with these shots.  Hopefully, the worst of it is over and I'll avoid the dreaded headache.  Lupron always gave me one so I'm thinking this will prolly too.  Thanks again, much appreciated.
