Sleep question

Wondering if any mommas have a LO that does what my little guy does.

My LO sleeps pretty well through the usual night hours with a couple 3-4 hour stretches and one good feed in the middle...here's what happens. In the morning he will be up and awake and quiet, he will fuss on and off and will go about 4 hours or so with only 20-30 minute sleep stretches...then he goes to sleep in the early afternoon for a few hours, eat, late afternoon sleep then he's up around 7-8 pm and fussing again on and off between quiet awake times for 3-4 hours then the cycle starts again. Is it ok that he takes so long between long sleep stretches? He's by no means inconsolable like a typical colicky baby but he just doesn't sleep long and likes to be up and looking around pretty content between some fuss which is typically him wanting to eat or be held or sleep some.

Everywhere I read talks about these newborn 2-4 hour sleeps and up for a bit but that's not him! He can be alert for an hour or more easy....

I'll be bringing this up to his midwife and the pedi this week but wanted to see if anyone else is dealing with this

Thanks mommas

Re: Sleep question

  • I'm dealing with long wakeful periods with DD as well, except she is fussy for most of that time. She'll go 5-6 hours and only take cat naps. She'll always take the boob if I offer it but a lot of times she either pulls right off and keeps fussing or she'll eat and then spit up. We can get her to sleep using some of the 5s' s techniques but even in our arms she only sleeps for 30 min tops. And forget putting her down. It's so frustrating for all of us. It's like she wants to be awake but doesn't know what to do with herself so she gets frustrated. I was really hoping it was just a growth spurt, but I don't know.

Sorry that got long and venty about my own issues. I also plan to call the pediatrician tomorrow and I'm looking into seeing a lactation consultant. I hope you find answers. I'm curious myself.

  • I'm in your boat the last 2 days. He is up from 7am-11am with maybe a 10 minute nap in the middle, and then takes a normal nap (2 hours) by noon. The wakefulness is new and scary because everything I've read said that being awake for too long will lead to an overtired baby who has trouble sleeping at night. Hoping this is temporary!

This is us the past 2 days. Yesterday, he was up all night, not crying just looking around etc. i BF at 2:30 am and 5:30 am and he slept from 7-8:30. Then he had a good 2 hour nap in the morning and he was up again from 12:30-19:30 with just 2 10 min naps between. OMG I could go crazy. I fed, changed diaper, hold, put in RnP.. Nothing would do. Hope all this evens out soon..
  • That's how it has been lately for us too.  He still sleeps well at night, but during the day, he will only take short 20-30 min naps and be awake most of the time.
