When to worry about breech baby?

For the last few appointments (they have been weekly scans due to the Kiddo coming in rather small on a previous growth measurement), Kiddo has basically not changed positions from breech. His head is tucked right under my right rib cage, and feet down by my bladder (oh joy), getting ready for the World Cup this summer. And based on my own uneducated guess of his body position, I don't think he has ever even tried out the left side of my body, much less tried to stick his head near the exit sign.

Since I will be a FTM and obviously clueless, can someone tell me at what point I should start freaking out, or trying inversions and stuff, to move him from breech?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Re: When to worry about breech baby?

  • Typically about 36 weeks is when my doc starts worrying about breech babies.  Some can turn as late as while you are in delivery though.

FTM here, but my understanding is that there is always time for the baby to flip, and I know someone personally who got her baby to flip at 38 weeks by pressing a bag of frozen peas on top of her belly.

  • Well my experience is different from everyone else, but IMHO, why does it matter?  DS was breech and we didn't find out until I was in labor.  And, it wasn't like he moved in the week since my last check.  Looking back, I realize now that the hard "lump" I felt under my ribs was his head and I'd felt it for several weeks.  I wasn't worried about this possibility because my doctor's weren't.  Ultimately I had a c-section which wasn't planned.  At least you'll go into it knowing.

FWIW, because DS was in that position for awhile, he did have torticollis which we had to work on after he was born, but even that wasn't a big deal.

I had this exact same experience!  All of it except the torticollis!  This time, requesting an ultrasound at 36 weeks because not something I want to experience again.  They didn't know he was breech until the pushing stage.

  • I am officially 34 weeks with twins and mine still keep flipping around. My MFM dr said she doesn't think they will move much more in the next 1-2 weeks. Idk how they are moving. I've run out of too
  • My kiddo is transverse - head on my left. But that is a flip from head on my right, where it was in every scan from 24-34 weeks. Last Thursday, it flipped to the left after my first chiropractor visit, getting the Webster technique. Today, we are 35 weeks 3 days and head was just scanned on the left.

My ob said we will start talking about an aversion and/or c-section at 36 weeks. That's at this Friday's appointment. Hopefully, this kid gets it's act together and heads towards the exit soon!

The RN who did my NST today told me she had a friend who got 3 babies to turn from breach by putting a speaker between the thighs the night before her scheduled c-sections. I just may try that!
