Daycare and fever ?? long

Does your daycare provide Motrin or Tylenol for esp high fevers? Or allow that you keep your own with them in case something happens?

Last Tues I got a call from them that my DS had a 101.3 fever - they don't require him to leave until 101.5 and I had about 30 min of work left. While I was on the other line with the pediatrician to get an apt  minutes later they call and say it has climbed to 104. I run out of my office let my boss know what's going on and make the 30 min commute home. He is burning up when I get there - they haven't asked about giving him a fever reducer so i ask if any has been given take him straight to the ped's office and they give him Motrin - and his fever comes down. We were out for the rest of the week ( hand, foot, & mouth, pink eye, and ear infection) so today I bring in a bottle of Motrin and ask what their policy is. My concern being what if it had taken longer to get there and his fever gotten dangerously high. They said that a few weeks ago they had a little girl with a 104.9 and they didn't give her anything to bring it down and her parents were an hour away. The offered the parents to call a neighbor or friend to bring some in but wouldn't give it  themselves parents couldn't get a hold of anyone so the little girl sat there with a super high fever until the parents arrived. I am unsure what the purpose of telling me this because it just made me more mad at the whole situation.

When I kept pushing the issue they said in my case they would allow to leave it there for just in case and would then call me for my permission if his fever ever got that high again but not to tell other parents that they were allowing me to do so.

Is this normal with daycare? Am I over reacting for being so annoyed about this?

  • I think it is a state reg. both centers we used say no meds unless it is a script.

ok - So then it is what is i guess.  I don't know the process - it's our first 3 weeks of daycare so I am without my bearings.

  • @PrivacyWanted - I would have been ok with that being the case but they were like we have 104 students and don't keep anything on hand just in case.

@K3am I am horrified about it and I am not a clutch your pearls kind of gal - I just can't let it go. It makes me question their judgment a lot. And they are the best one in our area. I know I got my way in the end so to speak - they let me leave it there - but my heart breaks from the other little girl they spoke of and I can't help but get upset about it.

  • Our DC will only give meds with a prescription from the pedi. They cannot administer "as needed" it has to be a set date and time. It has never been an issue.

Our DC requires we leave our own Motrin there with a Dr's note and a form signed by us.  They call us to approve before giving DS any meds.

  • I would not be comfortable with DC staff administering medication. I am not one to usually "fight" fevers, though. I'd much rather they remove any cumbersome or warm clothing and apply a cold compress to his neck.

That said, our DC would require a doctor's note to give any meds.

My DC will only do meds with a doctor's note. Only prescribed days/times, not as needed.

This is how it works at our DC.

    this is us too...
  • Our daycare will not administer medicine for any reason unless the pediatrician has prescribed it with a date and time as well. They will not store over the counter medications to just have on hand. When DS has run a fever at DC in the past they will call me and let me know that they have removed clothing layers, given him some extra fluids and applied a cold compress until I can get there.

I would certainly want my daycare provider to be able to store OTC medicine I provide (with my written consent and even a doctor's note would be fine) after contacting me in the case of an emergency situation as I was travelling to pick my child up.

A fever can come out of nowhere, and if I was an hour away it is absurd that my child shouldn't be offered relief in that time.  I mean, what is the point of a child care provider who can't provide the care needed at a critical juncture?  Sure there are lots of variables at play, but I truly think it is quite reasonable for them to call you and for you to be able to say "Give LO a dose of motrin and I am leaving now".
This is what I was feeling but didn't state it as well as you.

Being new to the daycare situation I was curious what others have encountered and well sometimes i need a gut check to see if I am over reacting. Thanks guys for all the responses.

  • State regulations prohibit daycares in our state from giving any meds, even OTC, without a doctor's note. And I would be shocked if our doctor would write a note, or if a daycare would accept a note that said something like, "In the event of any fever, give Tylenol or Motrin." I would not be remotely upset about what happened in your particular situation as our daycare cannot give fever reducers.
