Toddler playing with poop

Looking for some legit advice please!

For the last month or so, DD, has been getting in her diaper and playing in her poop-- reaching in her diaper, and smearing it everywhere.  It seems to happen if she poops and we don't change her right away.  She did it once at DC (during the time that she was supposed to be napping) and a bunch of times after we have put her down to sleep.  I realize it's probably on the spectrum of normal behavior, but it's so gross and disturbing and I am not sure how to make it stop.

We have tried:

putting a onesie on her (she manages to get her hand at the poo via leg openeing)

putting her PJs on inside out (to make it more difficult to unzip)

masking tape on the diaper

It makes things a bit more difficult that DD has a significant speech delay and doesn't really have the words yet to tell us that she's pooped (if you are on mobile she is 28m.)

Any advice is appreciated-- my kid's got the fecalphelia!

  • Loading the player...
  • Does she have problems pooping at all?

Ever since we started giving Isla her fiber first thing in the morning, she goes at the same time every day, once a day.  Maybe that could help?  Most kids don't get enough fiber anyway.

She probably doesn't get near enough fiber-- but she goes at least once per day.

That's a good suggestion though-- maybe we will talk to the ped to see if there's a fiber supplement that we can mix into a drink or something (getting her to eat new things is pretty tough right now).

  • Thanks @tyrannosauruslex!

She DOES love play doh-- so that is totally something we can do more of-- her poops are pretty solid too- -those are the ones she goes for.  I guess they are the most fun.

TY for the feedback ans suggestions-- keep them coming!

  • Nothing worked for us- my kid did this for 8 months- freaking gross! Once he was potty trained, he stopped. My kid also had language delays, and could not really communicate well with telling us when he had to go. It made potty training a little more difficult. But when we decided to potty train, we just went cold turkey- underwear only, took a TON of changes of clothes, and about a solid 2 months. Luckily his teacher at school was on board with us.

    Good luck.
  • My kid has language delays and sensory issues, and he did this starting in June last year (2.5) through October. We tried everything, but the only thing that worked was putting him in backwards footless one piece pajamas. We got them at TCP, Old Navy, and Gap, or you could just modify regular one piece PJs. Once we cut off access to the area, he stopped doing it, but it wasn't until he was potty trained that it was gone for good.
