Breastfeeding

Feeding every hour or less

My baby is now six weeks old and for the last four days or so he has been eating very frequently in the evening. Sometimes I feed him twice in a 1hr period. He will be okay and then start to cry. My husband and I have tried rocking him, bouncing, singing, humming, walking, and a pacifier. The pacifier will work sometimes for a little while, but then he just spits it out. When I put him on the breast he calms down and nurses usually between 5 and 10 minutes before he starts to fall asleep, but he doesn't let go. Most of the time if I start to unlatch him, he starts sucking again for a few seconds and then stops again. Is this normal behavior for a baby his age? I have been trying to pump in the evening before I go to bed, but with his crazy schedule, I have only been pumping about 1oz from the fullest breast. Could he only be getting a small amount of milk at each feeding and really be hungry that often?

Yep, PP's right about the 6th week growth spurt. It's a doozey! Continue to feed baby on demand and you may want to wait till the growth spurt is done before you pump again. Wearing LO also helped us. Hang in there, that one was a rough one for us. GL!
  • Normal, and it happens every 2-3 month for us but it's gone after a week or so. The 'problem' with your LO sucking everytime you try to unlatch is common I guess... my LO is 10 months and still does it from time to time. I just unlatch him  and he will not wake up if he is full.
