Quilt before babies come or after?

For our son (first child) we made a full size Grinch who stole Christmas quilt while I was pregnant.  He is now 18 months old and rarely uses his quilt. We used it a few times when he was little for him to play on. Now we are pregnant with twins. They are shy so I don't know the sex yet so maybe that is why I haven't felt motivated to craft for them yet.

After talking to my husband we wondered if we should make quilts before the twins come with a theme of our choice or if the quilts would mean more if we wait until they are older and let them pick out the theme/colors?  I kind of like the idea of handing down something to them that I made while I was pregnant with them. But maybe that doesn't matter?

Thoughts?

I would make them before. What if instead of a large theme, maybe a more general theme? Such as a color way?
I was thinking if girls, or one is a girl of doing Hollie Hobby. Nothing extremely fancy as far as blocking as I am new to quilt making. But I do like the idea of just doing a color palette. I saw some that were pretty and just stripes.

  • I made my baby girl two quilts before she was born and like the fact that I can tell her in years to come that I worked on them while she was in my tummy. She doesn't really care much about them now other than to sit on them when I've laid them out for her, but I know in a few years she'll understand more that they are hers and come to appreciate them more.

  • With 3 under 2 looming? Get what you can get done now! :)

I like the idea of doing smaller baby quilts, save the big bed sized quilts for when they're older. I think the Grinch quilt would be really fun to bring out as a seasonal quilt- my kids LOVE that kind of thing, changing decor for holidays. Your son is so little still, he'll love it.
This is a great idea! Thanks :D

  • Made LO a blanket where was a premade/prequilted and added border tape to it while pregnant. Also while pregnant I started piecing together random left over pieces of fabric from blankets I've made over the years. Didn't finish that until a bit after her first birthday. Added all the nicknames we had for her over the year plus pregnancy, along with a few pockets and her going home from the hospital outfit with her birth stastics sewed onto it. Then attached it to a soft & fuzzy twin sized blanket (backing). LO plays wih it on occasion & enjoys sitting on/under it with me on the floor, but figure it will be on her bed once she transitions to a big girl bed. Love it for all the colors, different bits of fabric, and we could play eye spy with it (has tons of different themes in it since is made up of bits of left overs).

Agree about seasonal blankets - have made a Spring one, a Christmas one & a birthday one for my friend's daughter.
