Cloth Diapering

Is it a cloth diaper or a burp cloth? Confused!

Hi ladies!  I'm due in September and my neighbor passed on some used baby items to me prior to her move.  Included in her items were things that look just like pre-folds for cloth diapers, but with fancier fabric in the center... I'm totally confused if these are burp cloths or diaper inserts.  She did know that I wanted to cloth diaper with this baby.  Googling didn't seem to help; it pulled up a variety of "cloth diaper/burp cloth" combinations, which confuses me even more.  It seems odd to me to use a diaper insert as a burp cloth, but maybe I'm being silly and it's normal.  Are these burp clothes, or diaper inserts, or both?!  (Note: some are labeled "Swaddle Designs", but definitely look like prefolds to me.)

  • You could post a pic and we could probably tell you. But a lot of people use prefolds as burp cloths.

  • We use the prefolds we've outgrown (or previously used the one we had yet to grow into) as burp cloths.  Typically the pretty prefolds sold to be used as burp cloths will be a lighter weave and/or not as many layers of material as you would want if you were using as a diaper.  I guess you still could use them as diapers but you might need to use 2 or more to have the needed absorbancy.

  • Here's a pic, if that helps.  I get a feeling it's a burp cloth since it's super thin in comparison with the pre-folds I bought specifically for diapering, but the look of it (in thirds) confused me.

  • Yup, burp cloth :) my MIL made me some of these from the gerber cloth diapers and many friends have been given the same.

  • Real diapers would be so much better but I don't think people know where to find real prefolds. I have some that people made with the gerbers and they curl and don't absorb any spit. I'm going make some of my outgrown prefolds fancier by doing that since I already use them for burp cloths.

One of my friends received burp cloths made from prefolds and loved them, so I asked MIL to make me some and I really didn't like them at all and I think this is the problem. My friend's were made from a quality cloth diaper and larger than newborn prefold, while mine are made from Gerber Newborn Prefolds. It took about 4 months for me to like the absorbancy as much as my plain Babies R Us burp cloths, though I still think they are a little small and always reach for my others first.

  • Thank you so much ladies!  It was driving me nuts for organization purposes, now I know these go with the burp cloths.

I purchased OsoCozy prefolds for this baby, which are super thick and seem pretty good, along with a combination of bummis, thirsties, and bum genius covers in a small selection to try out the brands before I commit to one.
