When do kids start having sleepovers?

I was talking to a mom yesterday at Lydia's party. She said she has a niece who is 9 and her mom hasn't done "friend" parties for her for a while. She only has family parties. In place of the "friend" party, gets to pick 3 friends to sleepover. The mom I talked to says her sister loves it, it's much cheaper than throwing a party and inviting the whole class. I was wondering when I might be able to try to suggest this cheap alternative to Lydia! But I don't even remember my first sleepover.

    @cjcouple‌ Like I would drive them to wherever? Or I'd invite their moms too and pay for everyone? I do like this idea!

    2nd grade seemed to be the year that sleepover birthday parties start -- in full swing in 3rd grade, I would imagine (not there yet!!) I think they're tough though, especially for a birthday party. When people only have room for a few, feelings get hurt. My daughter felt so bad feeling she had to keep her friend's sleepover party a secret because another friend was not invited. At 7, she just wasn't ready to deal with this information in a tactful manner.

    Taylor (6) tried a sleepover this year and her friend left at 10:30 pm.   :(
    There were tears on both sides which was sad.  Alex successfully slept over at a friend's house in Kindergarten.  Taylor is a very shy kid, with some anxiety issues, so she has yet to sleepover at anyone other than Aunt's or Gma's - and never alone.  

    I would take the kids for ice cream (no Mom's) for a special thing, no sleepovers at 5.  Or do a sleep-under where she has girls over after dinner, picks a movie, do all of the girl's nails, have a snack and send them home.  The fun of a sleepover without the anxiety of sleeping.

    I wish I had asked this BEFORE I started planning Lydia's party - haha! I love these ideas! Don't get me wrong, Lydia loves the children's museum, she and her friends had a blast yesterday! But these ideas you guys are giving me just seem so much more special :x I'm already thinking about what to do for Lydia's next birthday!!

    Julia hasn't had any sleepovers yet and she's at the end of 1st grade. I remember my first sleepover party being 3rd grade, but I had a few sleepovers with a single friend before that. I want to say that started around 2nd grade.

    DD had her first slumber party just last Friday. She turned 8. It was the first sleep over for most of the kids and we had two pick-up times, 9:30 p.m. for the kids sleeping "under" (not spending the night) and 9:30 am for the ones sleeping over. She was allowed to invite 8 kids, all showed and 5 stayed the night. It is a totally cheap and easy party. We decorated pillowcases and watched Frozen. However, I owe my neighbors in the houses next door cookies because 8 girls are loud!

    We started in second grade, so 7 or 8?  I made the mistake the first year of having way to many kids.  We've cut down to 4-5 friends and it's much more manageable.  I've found it is a lot cheaper and the girls are happy to entertain themselves.

    My DD is 2nd grade/8 and hasn't had one yet. She ONLY just asked if she could have one, so I told her maybe this summer she could.  I have a strange feeling I'd be getting up at midnight to get her, though.

    I went to my first one when I was 8 or 9 but I didn't make it through the night. The girl's parents had to take me home at midnight. I never really had a slumber party at my house with a bunch of girls. I was only allowed one or two friends to spend the night. It was never for my birthday. I did spend the night eventually at other people's houses. I grew up in a rural area, so my parents always knew the other parents well.
