OPK: fmu vs. afternoon testing

So this is my first cycle of clomid and IUI....I had my CD 12 u/s yesterday follicles on both sides. So I am oop for u/s I had one before I started clomid (no cysts yay!) and on cd 12. My nurse suggested I start testing with OPKs. She suggested the advanced digital clear blue easy...so I can measure estrogen and lh. So her instructions stated I should test from 3pm-8pm after a 4 hour hold but the instructions on the box state I should use FMU. I always use CBE advanced and I use FMU. Not sure what to do? I just can't really afford another $175 u/s when I still have to pay oop for iui and sperm washing. Any thoughts?
Me: +35 DH: +35
TTC: Since January 2013 
DX: PCOS. Severe Endometriosis, Unicornuate Uterus w/only left tube and left ovary, Pedunculated fibroid (on the outside of uterus) and Anovulation. All conditions diagnosed 8/13
TX: Metformin
DH DX: MFI - low morphology, low motility
Ultrasound shows both kidneys in spite of UU. 
HSG showed clear tube on the left side. 
Lap Surgery performed 1/9/14 to remove fibroid and endo (Stage 3)
  • IUI# 1 June 2014 started 100 mg of Clomid - 7dpiui Progesterone: 13: BFN
  • IUI#2  July 2014 started 100 mg of Clomid - 7dpiui Progesterone: 5.75: BFN
  • Natural Cycle - so shocked to be in 2WW - 7dpo Progesterone: 15.5: BFN
  • Working with new RE starting injectables in late August.
  • IUI #3 August 2014  w/ Menopur: BFN
  • Finally ovulating on my own!!
Waiting to start IVF hopefully

    How big were your follies on your u/s? Honestly I don't know that the advanced are better during treatment cycles since taking fertility meds can boost estrogen levels. I would follow the instructions on the OPK.

    DH (32): SA is ok, slightly low morph, normal SCSA  Me (32): Slightly low progesterone, hostile CM, carrier for CF, Moderately high NKC, High TNFa, heterozyogous mutated Factor XIII, and +APA

    October 2012-May 2014: 4 failed IUIs, 3 failed IVFs, and 1 failed FETw/donor embryos

    November 2014: IVF w/ICSI #4 Agonist/Antagonist with EPP and Prednisone, Baby Aspirin, Lovenox, and IVIG for immune issues.  Converted to freeze all due to lining issues.  2 blasts frozen on day 6!

    January 2015: FET #2 Cancelled due to lining issues

    April 2015: FET #2.1

    With most OPK's you should test twice a day. Once in the morning (around 10...NOT FMU) and then once in the afternoon/evening.

    I don't know anything about that brand but I never had as much luck detecting my surge later in the day. I had best luck with SMU and around lunch but in the evening it was alway negative. Then again that my have just been my surge ending.

    I always test with fmu, it's just easier for me. Sometimes I'll test after I get home from work, if I've been able to hold it a while.

    My first surge always comes in the afternoon (around 3pm).  Then I will get another +opk the next morning and afternoon (which is when I typically O).  If you can, I would test with FMU and again in the afternoon.  That way you don't miss the surge.

    I'm usually the same as @jszy10, My first OPK+ is an early afternoon, and then it's often positive the following morning and sometimes afternoon. Never FMU. Everything reliable I've read says that LH starts building in the morning so it's strongest no earlier than mid-morning most of the time. The internet cheapies I bought came with instructions that said to use FMU for OPKs but I would not. My RE told me to test around 10am.

    My RE suggested following directions on whatever test i choose. He suggested digital name brand starting CD 10. But i have a million wondfos and i think I'll test with those and then just confirm with the pricey one.
