Help -- baby constantly poops!!!

My 8 week old is getting expressed milk with occasional time at the breast. He poops ALL the time. He now has a rash that is so bad it's bleeding. Dr says it's the acidity in his poop creating the rash. Is there anything in my diet I can or should do to get this better under control?! He has a twin sister with the opposite problem...she poops about every 4 days.. I'm at a loss...I think this is just something he will outgrow??? What do you think?

Re: Help -- baby constantly poops!!!

  • By "all the time," what do you mean? At 8 weeks, DD was pooping about 5x/day, which is a lot, but not abnormal.

    What color/consistency is his poop?

  • Oh, also, for the rash itself: TRIPLE PASTE. It's heinously expensive, but it fixed DD's diaper rash when nothing else would.

It's probably closer to 12 poops a day. Generally it is yellow and seedy. Not necessarily a lot each time. We've nicknamed him squirt... Cause he's constantly squirting poop!!! Saw the pedi today and he recommended a baking soda bath and naked time. The nurse is calling tomorrow with an ointment recommendation used in plastic surgeon patients to clear up his current rash/sores.
  • My LO is the same way always pooping. I use aquafor (sp) it works great and no more rashes. Target sells their own version of it for less.

  • My LO did that for the first 3 months, when I told the doctor she was pooping upwards of 10 times a day, he high fived me and said that's a sign of a healthy baby. In my sleep deprived state I was not amused and suggested he come over and change some of them if he was so happy. He didn't hold it against me thankfully.

But seriously, sorry about the rash! I can only commiserate and let you know it will improve! We get one big messy poop a day now at 6 months. It does slow down! I actually miss a lot of small poops now that I've seen the damage one condensed poop does. I can't believe I just wrote about missing poop.

At that age my lo pooped almost every diaper. Even at 6 MO she poops at least once a day. Today was twice for sure. I wouldn't be too worried. As for the rash, the only thing I found that really worked was just petroleum jelly.
  • My LO used to poop after every feed at that age. At 5 months, she's down to once a day. We used a mix of lotramine, A&D and maloxx (recommended by pedi). LO had been bleeding but that cleared it right up. I think it would be fine to leave out the lotramine, in retrospect, unless LO has distal spots or other indications of fungus.

What are the proportions and what is the mixing technique for that combo?

Just need to second this. My LO had one really bad bout with diaper rash, brought on by crazing pooping, and it fixed her up FAST. Highly recommend Triple Paste.

Also, yes, your diet can affect LOs poo. Watch out for tomatoes, citrus fruits, pineapple, salsa, and other acidic foods.

My first daughter pooped with every nursing, so yes, 10 - 12 poops a day! And like you said, not necessarily a lot, just poops every time she nursed! My pedi said it's totally normal. Naked time clears up rashes really well.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your LO, I know how hard it is!
DD had a diaper rash since we left the hospital and it only got worse. She would poop abt 12 times per day too (yellow, seedy poop as it is supposed to be for a BF baby). It was a blistering rash that would not go away. Pedi suggested a few different diaper creams, but it didn't work. She also said it was probably the acidity in her poop, so I stopped with all acidic foods and it did not help either. Until she was 2 months old, we tried over 10 types of diaper cream and would do naked time for about 8hrs a day, and the rash would not go away. At this point I was willing to do anything. At her 2 month check up, the Pedi finally told me to cut out dairy from my diet as it could be an intolerance to the protein in Dairy. The rash got better within 2 weeks of cutting out dairy, but still didn't go away completely, so I decided to cut out gluten too, and withing another week it was finally gone. Her diaper rash and constant pooping was caused by a dairy and gluten intolerance.
It was very hard at the beginning to cut out all forms of dairy and gluten. I kept a food journal and wrote down everything I ate to reference back if she had any reactions. There was a few times I accidentally had dairy or gluten and within a day she would develop the rash again and it would take abt a week to clear up, but the food journal helped figure out what I ate that caused it.
DD is now 6 months old and is doing great! I still EBF and she hasn't had a diaper rash for a very long time. We recently reintroduced dairy and she can tolerate small amounts just fine, but gluten is still a big problem for her.
I hope your LO gets better soon, but you may want to talk to your pedi abt food allergy/intolerance as a possible cause. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
