Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Doesnt want to stand

My son will be 1 in two weeks and Im looking for some suggestions. He is crawling, and will pull himself up on his knees but not to a stand. When I try to help him stand he bends his legs or wont put his feet flat and will get upset. He is a pretty big boy 23 lbs and 33'' long, so Im assuming his legs just cant handle his weight yet. I have toys that encourage him to pull himself up and stand, and I put toys up on the couch. He will just get on his knees and play with the toys. The past week or so he will put his hands on the floor and push up on his legs and stick his butt in the air. Almost like he is going to stand, but he doesnt. I bought a walker today hoping that will help get him moving with some encouragement. I know it will happen sooner or later but he eats a TON of food and Im worried he's going to pack on the weight since he's not super active. If anyone has suggestions or excercises that can help with him standing and eventually walking that would be awesome. Thanks!

My DD didn't pull up to stand until closer to 13 months old and just now at almost 15 months she is slowly getting used to standing unassisted for a couple of seconds. At 11.5 months old she had no interest in pulling up yet. She was just crawling like crazy..then at 12.5 months old she started pulling up next to the couch and reaching her toys and almost overnight she got really fast at pulling up next to the couch.

She is also very tall, like out of the chart tall.  Every time we go to the playground or somewhere, I'm asked how old she is because I assume (it's probably in my head) that she is taller than some 2.5 year olds and not walking yet, they always go "wow she is so tall" and given that I am 5 feet tall, it's pretty funny to have a 15 month old that's more than half of my height! ..anyway!

Does he always bend his legs and refuse to put his feet down flat? because DD does this when she doesn't want to walk (holding to our hands) or if there is something on the floor she'd rather play with but when there is nothing interesting she'd put her feet down and hold our hand(s) and walk. She started doing this after her first birthday though. Just the other day she took a few steps without falling but she is not going from sitting to standing up position on her own yet.  I brought up the fact that DD wasn't standing unassisted or showing interest to pull up at her one year appointment but my ped wasn't concerned at the time.

So I'd say give him some more time, each kid is different, but if you're concerned I'd bring it up to your ped at the one year appointment.

  • When he was younger would he put weight through his feet?  If you hold him on your lap now will he stand on you, bounce up and down, etc?  I'm a pediatric PT - I wouldn't be overly concerned about his mobility skills right now, but if he is super resistant to putting weight through his legs I would keep an eye on that and talk to the pedi.  Walkers are not recommended any more and can pose major safety hazards - I don't even know why stores sell them anymore!  Floor time is going to be much more useful to him in the long run, and will give him more opportunities to pull himself up and use his muscles/burn energy.

If he kneels to play with toys at the couch, put one cushion on top of another and make them high enough that he has to stand to reach them.  Some babies just need to do things on their own, and they don't like anyone forcing them stand if they don't want to :)
  • I don't think it's his weight at all. My DS was always in the 97% for weight & did all his milestones early. Walked at 11 months & 24 lbs

Walkers are fine if it's the push toy she's referring to

He will stand on our legs when we hold him but only for a few seconds. He does jump up and down a lot when being held but he has never liked to bear weight on his legs for very long. He is on the floor most of the time. I have both the push walker ad I got the walker he stands in yesterday.. I know those are not preferred by a lot of people but the space he uses it in is very open and I never leave him un-attended. We tried it out today and he stood for quite awhile. He definiately is the type that if he doesnt want to stand, he wont. He literally throws his back out, turns his legs into jello and screams lol. I will try the cushion thing.

Our son was a little late with the physical milestones. But then he would do a bunch of things quickly. In one month he crawled and pulled up standing. Does your son use an exersaucer or jumperoo?

I have both. He used to love the exercauser but since he started to crawl, he wont stay in it for more than 5 mins without crying. The jumperoo is another story. He loves it, but I just recently put it away because it only has a 25 pound weight limit and he close to that now. Plus he would jump so hard and fast he was literally raising himself out of the seat.
