Recommend your bottle

We introduced a bottle to DD around 2 weeks as per our pediatrician's recommendation. She usually takes 1-2 bottles a day from DH or a visitor. She is now 4 weeks and we're still having trouble. I know this is a new skill she has to develop, but I'm looking for suggestions on bottles/ nipples that might make it easier.

So far we've tried the standard Medela, the Medela calma (she had no idea what to do with that one and just cried), and the avent natural. With all of them she chokes and usually spits up, even holding it parallel to the floor and burping every 1/2 oz. And I checked, they are all the slowest flow nipples. And all of this happens regardless of whether she is calm or fussy before a feeding.

So what do you ladies use with success? Or do we just have to keep at it?

Re: Recommend your bottle

  • Our son was in the nicu for a few weeks and they used the Enfamil (sp?) from birth with him and he takes it great. Any other bottle we have tried since we have been home.... We have had the same results as you have mentioned above. We have actually just started to buy the nipple/top and it screws onto most of the storage bottles (medela ect).

Good luck. Hope it gets better.
  • Loading the player...
  • Playtex drop in liner to reduce gas. Ive also used tommy tippy with DD and they worked great
  • We used the first years breastflow bottles, DD took to them right away.

  • We use dr brown natural flow bottles and tommee tippee. She doesn't seem to prefer one over the other. She eats good from both.

  • We tried the avent bottles but they didn't work for us at all... He does pretty well with the Dr. Brown bottles.
  • Tommy tippy work great for us. We have the closer to nature version. I wanted to use glass but this was the first one we whipped out and she likes it so we are sticking with it. It is bpa free.
  • the evenflo bottles are the same nipple style as similac/enfamil nipples for ready-feed in most hospitals. they are all my son will drink from. bonus: the are cheap ($4 for a 3-pack at Kmart)

Beck's using Tommee Tippee closer to nature also. No problems going from boob to bottle. He gets at least one pumped bottle a day.

We tried the free Avent bottle that motherhood gave us, threw it right in the trash.

  • Tommee tippee closer to nature colic preventer is what we use. He loves the nipple and they reduce had some what. He gulps so he gets air no matter what but I really like the slow flow
  • We are using Comotomo bottles because they were similar to the breast and slow flow. We didn't have any issues with him taking it. We also chose it because it was silicon and bpa free. Would have chosen glass but they were much heavier.
  • Tomee tipee, so far so good. We have the closer to nature bottles.
  • We started with the ready feed similac nipples in the NICU. Since being home I have tried Medela and we have Playtex Vent-Aire and Drop in liners which have the same nipple.  He has done well with all three but we will probably keep going with the playtex once he is getting more milk. Keep trying and good luck!
  • DS didn't do well with the tommee tippee closer to nature. My MW suggested the MAM brand colic prevention bottles and he's doing great with them. Way less gas and fussing.
  • We use both tommee tipee closer to nature and NUK borrles, the both work great
  • I didn't read still the responses, but every kid is different so you may just have to try a few out before finding one that works.

We tried mimijumi, breastflow, and Dr. Brown's. Dr. Brown's was the winner for us.

My nephew would only take playtex drop ins with the latex nipple.

How you find one that works soon :-)

  • Playtex drop ins over here

    It's a BOY

  • We tried tons of bottles with DS and the regular (not natural) Avent ones were our favorite. The newborn nipple is their slowest flow, and it was actually too slow for DS. We moved him up to the next level around 3 weeks.

  • My little one does the choking thing every once in awhile and we've been using bottles for 2 weeks now. Our pediatrician said that she has a very strong suck on the bottle and to try and slow her down by placing the tip of the pinky of the hand holding the bottle under her chin and to lightly push up ..kind of guiding her to not open her mouth so wide and it works! The stopping every 1/2 ounce makes her angry and that makes the sputtering and 'choking' worse.
Just an idea in case it isn't the bottle. We've been using the medela bottles and the chin trick works with them.

We use the avent and tommee tippie bottles also but we prefer the medela.

We used the Playtex VentAire and the regular Avent bottles with DS1. With DS2 we are using the Avent Naturals glass bottles (plus some of the other 2) and haven't had any problems. But I know some kids are really picky about what bottles they use.

  • I work nicu and we have flow rates posted because all "newborn" and slow flow nipples are different... There is no standard. A breast fed baby doesn't tolerate faster flows well, so slower is better, which it sounds like would benefit your babe. Dr browns premie nipples are the slowest on the market (Amazon or babies r us). The next slowest flow are dr browns level 1, and playtex vent air newborn being next. Medela's calma bottle is one of the fastest, and most expensive, bottles out there. I have never seen a baby do well with it (from a nicu perspective).
  • I use Playtex vent aire and nuk
  • When is the time to change from newborn nipples to a faster flow? We are using the avent freebies from motherhood and I am not too happy with them. I am going to try a few of the others recommended here
  • We use Dr. Brown here. I was nervous at first because in the hospital he was using the nipples that come with the pre made enfamil formula. And I thought maybe we'll have an issue switching from those nipples to my bottles. But he has had no issues.
  • I have to use a nipple shield and my LO's latch isn't always the best, so I started pumping and using a bottle.  He seems to like Dr Browns (level 1) the best so far.

I read that for Dr Browns it's recommended to switch to level 2 around 3 months... but I'm a FTM so I'm not completely sure.  Prob depends on your LO's feeding habits.

  • In the nicu we were using the nipples that are used with the pre made formula that were newborn flow. We didn't have success with the tomee tipped and found the nipples to be too flexible for our LO. We are using the advent natural still using newborn flow nipple at 11 weeks old.

  • We are using Born Free glass bottles and haven't had any trouble.
