Harry Potter - When to start reading series to child?

So I want to start reading a series of books to my 3 year old (July 2011) at bedtime. Do you think I could start Harry Potter now? What age do you think Book 1 is appropriate for a child to grasp? How about attention span? Why am I over thinking this? I haven't read Sorcerer's Stone since it was originally released.

I don't think a three year old would really understand. Plus HP can be kinda scary in some parts, but I guess that would depend on the kid.

I think ages 7-8 might be a better time to start HP. Some of my friends read it to their kids around that age, and they loved reading it together.

Eta: I mean, I don't have a three year old, so I can't speak to attention span either. But we will probably read it to DD when she's older.

  • I would think as a read aloud, 5-6 would the earliest I would start, and even then I probably wouldn't go past the 4th book for few years. I read The Little House series with my kiddo at about that age, and it was a hit (The first 4 books).

  • I waited till he wanted to read them himself.  He read the first one when he was 8, and just finished the last one at 10.  He loves them.

I just tried to start with DD who's 5, and she just kept stopping the story to ask what the bigger words mean, and she definitely had trouble following along. I'm thinking of trying again around 7/8 years old.

My 3.5 year old had zero interest. He's also got the attention span of a gnat though.
  • There's some great Apps for getting lexile levels on books. I would suggest using this to help you find books that would be appropriate for your child. I wouldn't suggest at this point going beyond books that are a level M (Lexile 601-650). Those would be a second grade reading level. Based on my knowledge of books and the complexity of plots, storylines, and the likelihood of material being appropriate for your child's age I would try to find something in that range.

  • We let DS's watch movies 1 and 2, and DS1 has read most of book 1. They were 8 and 6. We aren't moving past movie 2 for a while.

  • @Rondackhiker I use lexile leveler at work. There is also one called Level it Books that has good reviews.

@fredalina, do you anticipate Char bringing up the orphan/loss of parents/similar to adoption connection? This is one factor in me waiting with DS. I have a bad relationship with my parents and was adopted on my dad's side and I ended up sobbing during the last book with his parents being there for him and I couldn't help but wonder how DS would feel about that. I had a lot of questions growing up about my BF and I really related to HP in that way. I don't want to dredge that stuff up for DS if he ends up feeling that way even though he hasn't at this point. I know Char is so insightful and inquisitive so I was wondering what you've thought through about this.
Not really. I think the "adoptive parents" aka aunt and uncle in HP are sufficiently awful so as not to be desirable. Adoption is in so many movies. Stuart Little is a bad one. Tangled is worse. It's just going to come up and we'll have to deal with it when it does.
Have you seen the prequel to The Little Mermaid that explain's Ariel's mom's death and Triton's mourning? Ugh...
